What is your Aperture version and your MacOS X version?

they are all stored on on the hard drive on my mac and not on any external volumes.

So you are having referenced images on your internal system volume?

The only case that I know of, that referenced images on the system drive went offline, was a case where the user's home folder was protected by file vault. You do not by any chance have set up file vault on your home folder?

Or do you access your referenced original files by other applications than Aperture?

    Apeture -  V 3.24

    MacOS - V10.6.8

Your suggestion re Vault rang a bell - I had enabled the Vault feature but have now switched that off and re started the machine.

When I select  FILE / LOCATE REFERENCED FILES I see 2 volumes in the top. THE 1st is called All Volumes and the status is blank. ~The 2nd is my name and the status is offline.

I do not reference the files form any other application (that I am aware of).

With File Vault on you are risking that Aperture cannot find the referenced files, if they are stored inside the vault protected folders. That problem should now be solved.

When I select  FILE / LOCATE REFERENCED FILES I see 2 volumes in the top. THE 1st is called All Volumes and the status is blank. ~The 2nd is my name and the status is offline.

"All volumes" is simply that - a summary of all your volumes.

"The 2nd your name" I presume is your home folder. Aperture still believes it is a mounted, encrypted volume, and that is now offline.

You need to reconnect your versions once more to the originals with File vault disabled.

In the upper part of the window select one image, in the lower part, the file chooser, select the corresponding image file; then press the "Reconnect All" button.

Hopefully now your originals should stay connected.
