My MacBook Pro 13 (December 2012) had iTunes Match turned off. Don't know how that happened, BC it was on. SImple solution for me was to just go to the store, sign off and back on, and turn iTunes Match back on for this computer.  Don't know how or why, but it did work.

I keep having this issue too with all my devices, and I'm getting pretty fed up of having to go through the process. I have about 70 GB of music on itunes match and when i sign out, it takes hours to be available again, and i do have a good internet connection (60mb/sec). I think the fact remains that this service, which you pay for, is simply not up to scratch.

I am having terrible problems with this.   Lots of music and playlists missing.  I had over 4000 songs but iTunes Match now only downloads 702!!

I restored my iTunes folder from a Back up.   It showed over 4000 songs greyed out then they disappeared.

Time Machine has now deleted the back up and it is no longer the

Also, if I now try and restore my previous iTunes Folder from TM it says there is not enough room to copy even though there is!!!

    HELP!

    Angus

PS  I am in Mountain Lion and iTunes 11.01

I have iTunes match and have notice that only the songs with bit rate greater or less than 256 are greyed. Anything right at 256 is not greyed.

I have tried signing out and back in to everything, restarting iTunes, restarting the computer, reinstalling iTunes and adding all my music back in.  These songs with a bit rate different then 256 just stay greyed out.

Still nothing.   Here is Apple's reply:

Thank you for your patience. The investigation into this issue is now complete.

I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, however there is nothing we can do to retrieve your old library. The issue may have been caused by a blank library on your computer when you re-subscribed to iTunes Match. Whatever the issue was, iTunes Match cannot delete songs of it's own volition. Therefore, the songs that you had uploaded or matched to your iTunes Match library will need to be added again, if you are able to retrieve them from another back up or the CDs directly.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

I am not happy at all as:

    1.   I paid for a service to keep my Music Safe

    2.   My own back up failed so assumed Apple's OK

    3.   I do not know where a lot of my original music is and I am not going to sit and rip 4000 songs

    Any advice?

Everyone of these work arounds sounds great. i've tried them all. None fix the problem permanently. I'm tired of going to one of my devices, and not being able to play my music. I've got the files stored locally on an external drive but i'm tired of reimporting everything, searching for dupes, deleting dupes and cleaning up the more than 10,000 songs. Guess who won't be signing up for a renewal next year?

This fixed it for me. Took a long time.

I've been plauged with the dysfunctional match service since it was introdcued. No amount of signing in / out, reinstalling / deauthorisng etc. works. The service is simply unstable and should have been left in BETA.

I just build a new PC and it only managed to download 60% of the music I previously uploaded. the rest seems to be stuck in a (black) cloud!

There is a simple solution - go to song list, select all and select 'Check selection' in contextual menu. It helps!

Restarting iTunes didn't work for me, iTunes wouldn't let me sign back in, it kept coming up with errors. I deactivated iTunes Match but couldn't sign in to put it back on. Finally my solution was to go to the iTunes Store and then sign in from there at the top left instead of through the menubar. Makes no sense. But my thinking was desperate-for-my-money Apple would surely let me sign in if I was in the iTunes Store, and hey hey I was right. iTunes Match is back on and all my music is back.

I second AlexXF for the "Check Selection" method.  There used to be a way to play only checked songs which was one way to force iTunes to skip the crappy songs.  I couldn't find any "Skip Unchecked Songs," but there is an option in the General iTunes preferences to "Show List Checkboxes."  Unchecking this resolved my issue without having to Select All and check them all with a right click.  Now none of my songs are greyed out and they all play properly!
