You do have the right hardware but NOT have the specified ios, it has to be Mountain Lion 10.8 or later. You will need to purchase that to Mirror, but it is worth it! Mirror is a new feature with Mountain Lion, the main reason I upgraded.

I am also considering upgrading to ML just to get the mirroring feature but am concerned about all the complaints about loss of battery life. I have a MacBook Pro 13" bought last July. Have you had battery issues?

To be honest I use mine mainly near power and juice up when I can so I don't test the battery too heavily, so I haven't noticed but would probably not.
If mirror is the only thing you want to do but don't want ML look at third party apps such as airparrot or reflectorapp (I hvae used airparrot and found it OK).
