I agree, Arthur.  I don't think people realize how incredibly frustrating it is when you need to use your phone for text, vm, or to place a call and you can't do anything with it.  It basically becomes an iPod Touch until it begins to work again.

Plus, it's always a total pain when you finally do connect to a network after not knowing that you've been disconnected for a few hours and all of a sudden you get a flood of text messages/iMessages, emails, and voicemails that you missed during this time.

I am just glad that I don't use my iPhone for work.  If I did, I would have to switch.  I've been an  fan and advocate for over ten years and this is my third iPhone (3G, 4, and 5).  This is the first product I've ever been really disappointed in.  I can't recommend the iPhone to anybody at this point because of this garbage.

I just hope there are no emergencies in the next few days until I can either get it replaced or iOS 6.1 is released.  Not even 911 works when you have no signal.

I had this problem as did two friends and we were all on orange in the uk. My phone was getting stuck on no signal twice a day, to and from work, after using the underground. My cousin on Vodafone did not have the same problem. I saw an apple genius a few times, reset my phone, swapped the phone and the sim but it made no difference. One friend swapped to EE 4g when it became available in October and it cured the problem for him. I did the same in November and since its only happened one or twice in total which is a huge improvement on twice per day.

I'm no expert but from what I ve read the new 4g network is basically at the expense of the 3G network. There were no new frequencies that's why the other networks do not yet have 4g and are going to have to bid later in the year. This means that standard orange / ee / tmobile (whoever they are) have a weaker service than before. When I was on orange my phone never used edge either like my 3GS did on O2 or my cousins did on Vodafone. I think the problem is the iPhone struggles on the poorer 3G network of orange. This would explain 3 users having similar problems.

Sounds like the 6.1 update address this issue though according to developers blogging on this thread.

    Hi Arthur,

All I can say, as I've said before, since putting the 6.1 beta on I've not had the problem. Not once. Never. Signal returns perfectly, as you'd expect. I'm led to believe, but don't quote me, that the 6.1 could be released 25th or 28th Jan.

With reference to your other point, I got a Nexus 4 just before Christmas. Very nice phone, so if you did want to swap (I've still got both with the iPhone 5 as my main) then I'm sure you'd be happy.

    Hi all,

I'm not sure if this fix has already been posted but I was having the same problem (no service after going through a no signal area) but the following worked for me:

Go to Settings > Carrier, and turn the automatic switch to OFF. It'll start searching available networks, then from the list choose your network; mine was EE 3G (I assume EE is for the 4G subscribers). I found this resolved the issue and I no longer have 'no service' problems.

    Hope this helps.

What upsets me is I've invested heavy in apple when everything was good.

    2x apple tv 2

    2x iPad 2

    2x iPhone 5

    1x iPhone 4

Lightning Hdmi out (for incar screens)

Countless other bits n bobs around the house.

They all work fine except the main bit I use every day and that's the iPhone 5.

Ok, so I would be selling the iPhone 5 from shear frustration but the rest would be

Just because I feel very cheated by apple.

Nice try, but there is absolutely no way that it is a network issue in my case.  My wife and I both have iPhone 5's that were purchased and activated at the same time on the same network.  She has never lost connection, whereas every few hours/days mine gets stick in a "searching..." loop until I turn the wifi, bluetooth, and cellular data off, set it to airplane mode, reset the network settings, and then do a hard shutdown on the phone, which is a process that works about 25% of the time.

It is either a software or hardware issue.  I will wait for 6.1 to see if the issue is fixed, but it's definitely not a network issue.

    Almost the same here,

Only two difrences is mine is 32gb (sim free) hers is 16gb (locked to 3uk)

I regularly go into known signal black spots (for all handsets/networks) and suffer the No Signal issue when I emerge.

Where as she dosent and in turn dosent suffer this problem.

The simple fact that this is fixed in the 6.1.0 beta tells me it's most defiantly a software bug.

You are right manual network setting does eliminate the problem but then for some reason the phone start draining battery charge fast. It does seem to be software problem and hopefully update 6.1 will rectify the issue as the phone should work on automatic network setting. If you are a frequent traveller in the world then manual setting will nedd to be changed over to automatic and back again to manual when you return home and this is a bit of unnecessary farce

Spoke to Orange/EE today in UK about this issue and amazingly the call centra representative said it's not their problem and they are not interested in an issue like this as they say it sounds like a handset fault. And despite the fact that I paid EE for the device (albeit a small amount at £29.99) and also that the contract is between me and EE, that it is Apples problem and I should speak to Apple about it! I knew their customer services were bad but they are clearly not remotely interested in this topic. So i'm just hoping the next software release resolves it or it appears i'm stuck for another 18 months with a phone that is not fit for purpose and that EE don;t honour contractural obligations, i.e supplying and selling hardware that actually works properly. I thought that was basical sale of goods law.

"On January 28th, a mere five days from now, iOS 6.1 beta 4 will expire. If the past is any indication, then Apple will act, either releasing a 5th beta for iOS 6.1, or releasing the iOS 6.1 golden master — a final baked version, which shortly precedes a public release."

Yes, but it has he build ID of a final.

It's happened before they've skipped GM

And gone direct to public final from beta.

    Fingers crossed.

Even if this problem is fixed tomorrow I will of paid pretty much the most you can pay for a phone , which is useless at its primary role ....a  PHONE !  nearly 3 months where my first ever mobile in 1996 was better !  I think they should call this phone APPLE CRUMBLE  that's the way they are heading for me any way ! Most frustrating

I am pretty sure that my iPhone 5 went into another "Searching..." loop yesterday just to celebrate the release of another beta.
