MacBook Pro Logic Board Failure

    Don't know for sure but I would guess Executive Relations since the ER person responded to my email to Tim Cook.

     

    They are titled, ER Advisors.

    Took the advice and called Applecare and asked to be transferred to Customer Relations. The gentleman on the line took down the information on my defective video controller card on my 2008 MBP and the new logicboard they said i needed replaced (and the fact they said the program ended and i was out of luck). Anyways he was actually quite sympathetic and said he would contact their manager as perhaps there was something they could do for me.

    Today a "manager" from the store called me back. She said she was asked to call me back due to some sort of repair problem I had (obviously no details were passed onto her, much to my disappointment). I gave the info again and asked what could be done here as a $2000 computer should last more than 4 1/2 years and the tech had indicated the issue was most likely nvidia related but only offered me 20% off the cost of a $500 part. She said she would have to speak to a Genius as she was not familiar with this.

     

    Here is where the call gets interesting.

     

    When she called me back she said she spoke to another tech and although the issue was related to the video card and logic board and fell in the date of the program my computer was not one of the ones impacted by the issue (what a coincidence that i had the same issue around the same time i said and was told the program was expired and offered a discount as a result). She then said that the video cards in Macbooks are expected to last 3-4 years and this was totally normal. "A $2000 Macbook computer is expected to only last 3-4 years before a $700-$1000 repair is needed?". "Yes", she said.  Anyways I was quite upset and asked if this fact would be in any future ads or was communicated to people when they bought one.. I totally expect to get computer issues with an older computer (they are not foolproof I realize - although this explains why Applecare is only 3 years...) it was just that one particular issue seemed unusual and obviously this and her comments were not providing me with any comfort in Apple or reason to pay a premium to purchase another product.

     

    Anyways they are not planning to do anything here and my follow up call to Applecare was a total waste of time.  It sounds cheesy but I think I'm  more ****** that I would be otherwise as it turns out Apple turned is no different than other big corporations. On the bright side I have very cool looking silver doorstop.

    I'm somewhat sympathetic to your situation - but lets face it, the warranty has to end at some point...

    HP for one. They built system with the same chip and have replaced all that have failed and still do.

     

    Apple Shapple they are worth what they cost.

    I wasnt expecting an extended warranty but if they have already acknoweldged it was a defective part to begin with I do expect them to replace it.

    Vince, I feel your pain & understand completely. In a way this is like a recall. It was a defective Product to begin with & Apple knows it is. But Apple is basically not fixing anyone's MBP who is past the 4 year mark & blaming our problems on the age of the computer. That was not the lifespan of all the other Macs I own. Beside my 17" Macbook Pro with the Nvidia defect, I own an iMac G3 & G4, an eMac, a Mac Pro G5, and a  2007 Mac Mini. They have all lasted way over 4 years without one single problem. These are the Apple Products I know & Love. I just hope to god my 2009 iMac 27" & my 2011 13" Macbook Pro, don't die after 4 years. My point is this! Macs were built to last. That's why we don't buy HP's or Gateways. We love our Macs & become attached to them. So when Apple doesn't do the right thing, as in this scenario, we lose all hope & confidence. And it makes us not want to boast about what great products Apple makes anymore. That is the sad thing about all of this. I always thought I could depend on Apple. I guess you can't depend on any corporation these days.

    That's interesting - because I've got an HP TX-1000 that failed just months after the warranty ended and HP's response was: "would you like to purchase a new laptop?".

     

    As I understand it - there was a NVidia class action lawsuit that may have covered the failed unit - but it was 1) difficult to quality, 2) a very tight timeframe to make a claim and 3) they basically replaced the top-of-the-line laptop with an entry level model. On top of that - you had to reside in the USA to qualify.

     

    IMO, Apple's repsonse was incredible by comparison.

     

    Since I wasn't able to jump through all the hoops that HP/NVidia placed in front of me - my TX-1000 is still waiting for the "penny-fix"...

    @baileyr The fact is, wether you like it or not, that HP extended their warranty to 8 years for this recognised Nvidia issue.  If you don't know the facts and have nothing useful to add, then best add nothing. (Edit - it took a class action to get this, but they did it, I have it in writing on a sheet I picked up from my local computer store).

     

    @Vince, you have my comiserations, I've been through the same merry go  round.  20 years ago I was an Apple evangelist, right up to this debacle.  Good job windows has grown up now and other OS's are springing up.

    Sorry - but my facts are based on what happened and my opinion is as valid as yours...

     

    I've read all the info on the long since expired (closed in March 2011) class action suit. You make HP sound like a great bunch of guys because they were forced in one country's courts to do what Apple did volunterily worldwide. They did *nothing* in my country.

     

    I'd prefer Apple to fix all of these failed machines (I have one sitting here that failed a few weeks ago) - but to use HP's reaction to these failures to bash Apple is laughable, at best.

    No one is - you have simply been replied to twice.  You asked what other company had extended it's warranty (implying none would) and two people have now responded that another company has, and moreover, extended twice as long.  If you don't want answers, don't ask the question.

    Since you insist on picking nits - post a reference for your 8 year quote.

     

    All documentation I have on the issue shows at best 6 years - and in most cases, less than 3 years to make a claim from date of manufacture. If I had been in the USA - I would have had less than 3 years to make a claim on my failed TX-1000. Since I wasn't in the USA - my warranty wasn't extended at all.

     

    Don't reply that some guy in some computer store said so. Look up the docs and read them...
