Yep, but there are some people who firmly believe that all hardware problems can be fixed (or were caused by) software.

Q: How many hardware engineers does it take to change a lightbulb?

A: Don't worry, the software team will fix it in the next release.

I have one interesting experience with this issue.

When I have connected my 3GS to my MacBookPro by USB wire, I immediately can see

"charging is not supported with this accessory".

But in the same time I see that data are transfering from iphone to Dropbox and are sync by iTunes.

It means that USB wire is OK.

    Why it cann't do charging?

Because charging and data go over different wires in the USB cable. The charging wire is not connecting properly.

I had a similiar issue with my iPod. I resetted my iPod, and the message disappeared at least during a week.

However, the message appeared again, and even the situation became worse because I couldn't charge neither my iPod nor my iPad. I could synch both devices with iTunes, but no charging at all.

No idea about why both iPod and iPad cables were broken but definitively it was an issue with the standard Apple cables.

When I was explaining this issue to the guys of the Shopping Centre where I bought both devices,  they told me that they use Logic3 cables instead of Apple cables. They usually have issues with Apple cables.

I was testing my iPod and iPad with several cables of such Shopping Centre, and everything was ok with the charging. I bought Logic3 USD Data/Charge cable: 9 Eur.

I took my iPhone 4 to the Apple store and they told me that it was fried and could not be fixed but they would take it as a trade in if I paid a for a new one. I ended up upgrading to an iPhone 5 through my service provider and it cost me $600 with a two year insurance plan with a three year contract, but I am sure that a week after the insurance  expires, the **** phone it's going to die, so I will have to buy the next iPhone 5S. But if this happens I will definatelly go with Android. Yeah I know, this posting is going to be taken out right away.

I love how lawrence insists it is a hardware issue for everyone, without even entertaining the idea that there even "might" be a software or firmware issue. His argument has been disproven by many people, including myself. I tested with the first version of OS on my old iphone 3g, and it works perfectly.  (never touched a cable or changed charging devices) and upgraded to all of the subsequent OS versions, and boom... Charging not supported by this accessory. It isn't solely a hardware issue, if even at all.  It is a software or firmware issue.  Maybe a tolerance that was set off, combined with flaky hardware (maybe a bad chip batch or something, latent ESD failures, etc etc) but it is something related directly to the OS upgrade.  Enjoy your Apple Fritter, Apple Sauce and Apple Juice, I will stick with my Droid.

In other words, you state that it is a hardware issue (tolerance that was off, bad chip batch, latent ESD failures...) I agree with that. It could be a hardware issue that didn't appear until there was a software change. But that doesn't make it a software issue; it's still defective hardware, as you stated.

At the end of the day some people have the problem and some don't! Some fixes suggested on here work for some but not for others!

People need to stop getting so touchy and arguing about whether it's this or it's that, i signed up to receive helpful or useful updates on this post and recently it's all been people thinking they know all and trying to be smart! If you have nothing helpful, useful or any suggested fixes for this issue that people haven't already tried then don't comment and argue!

Today I purchased a new usb charge cable direct from Apple so hopefully this may resolve my issue and stop that **** message! Fingers crossed because if it doesn't then come March i'm ditching Apple and going Android!

Recently I ordered new dual-USB car chargers.  I tested it out the other day, charging both my phone and my wife's iPhone 5 and so far it appears to be working.  I think it's the higher mAh rating on the charger.

Your right in some aspects, this forum has become somewhere to complain about Apple products. However if you would read back a couple of pages I  already stated that fact, people are frustrated that nothing offered on this site is helpful for very long. It's true millions of people have these products and there are bound to be verious  things go bad with different products still there is one common thread. Charging Not Supported. Lawrence states to me that all the views and replies on this thread is no reflection of Apple's image based on other threads and there replies. I stand by my opinion, IT IS a problem Apple IS aware of and they dont intend to fix it. Why kill the golden goose? Once more if you cant stand it anymore put iphone away and get a droid. Someday Apple dev make wake up and realize thier no longer the best phone around.

I was told, by apple and AT&T that this is a HARDWARE issue.  The major issue is with the 3gs and does not occur until updating to the 5.0 software.  My second phone began to start the same symptoms and now only charges with 1 cable in my house and we have 4 other iphones.  We should be issued upgraded models if we are experiencing inability to use the device at all, not just refurbished replacements.

I am aware this is a place to complain however if you read my comment again that's not what i wrote about .... i wrote about people thinking they know all about what it is or what it isn't when in actual fact none of us know what the issue is yet some people are getting so touchy about it and having petty digs to one another and there's just no need for it!

And as for put the iphone away and get an android - i don't have the money to be splashing out on another phone and another contract hence the reason i have now bought a new charging cable to see if it fixes the problem so please don't tell me what i should do - take in to account peoples situations and why we are stuck with our iphones at the moment! Contracts are expensive to get out of!

I feel the same as many others that the carriers and apple both are aware of the problem and neither of them will offer anything other than a solution that only leads to spending more money, weather it be terminating your contract,or buying a new device,or new charger,or a trip to the apple store which usually also leads to the same. All I know is that both 3GS iPhones on my account began displaying the exact same message immediately after upgrading the iOS.Completely rendering any charger useless including the ones used just minutes before.I AM NOBODY.But I am smart enough to realize there is just no way both phones encountered the same hardware issue at exactly the same moment in time. I also believe this has become a great place to vent frustrations maybe It will do some good from a documentation standpoint in the future to prove it is an actual problem for customers everywhere. When I first made contact with my carrier and apple about this issue,I was told that no one at all was aware of the problem which could clearly be proven wrong just by looking at this discussion.Sorry to ramble on and I know you will never get these moments of your life back.Maybe the carriers or apple can be ultimately billed for that also.

Problem fixed for me as per joedfelipe comment on page 4 of this thread.

Just get other electrical devices plugged along with your iphone/ipod out to fix this problem. Or directly charge your device on a wall socket without any other electrical devices (computers, TV, etc.) plugged along with it. Thats because (what i hypothesized) iphone and other apple devices require specific amount of voltage (or whatever electricity stuffs) to charge its battery. If other electrical devices uses up electricity/voltage with the same socket where your iphone is plugged in, it may cause the error "Charging is not supported with this accessory."

I plugged it into the wall usb addapter and no error.  With or without the Wifi on.

Thank you all for your input.  I was sure one of you would have the solution for me.

Im with you on the documentation of this problem. I dont see how anyone at apple can still say they are unaware of its exsitance. I also dont mean to offend anyone with my next statement but did people who signed these carrier contracts not do the math before signing up for them? I mean really They offer a 300 dollar phone for three years of service at 100 dollars or more a month, it would have been easier for them to put back three months cell bill then bought phone straight out. Phone companys dont care about problems After your leagally bound to them. My final thought is this maybe someone should take thier phone into apple store bring this page up, make someone read it, then see what excuse you get.
