So I made a legal home movie and made it into an m4v in my desktop computer.  I followed a great preset in handbrake to make us my m4v file was 100% compatible with ipad2.  I know it works because it is now on my iPad and plays wonderfully.

However......I wasn't able to drag/drop it from the desktop with which I made the m4v movie.  Instead, I had to put it in a USB key and walk it over to my laptop.  After that, I opened iTunes there and was able to drag/drop no problem.

I even since tried to drag the movie back over to my desktop with the same USB key, but that iTunes will still not let me drag/drop.

Why is that?

Is there version difference on your itunes?

No, sorry.  And I meant to post that.  11.0.1 on both.  I remembered to look yesterday just to make sure.

The wife just about lost it after that last upgrade when the side menu disappeared.  I showed her how to put it back.  But I still checked the versions in both just to be safe.

And both computers are using winxp sp3 up to date, etc.

Then I don't believe copy protection was a problem. Unfortunately, belief is all I got, never met anything like that before, sorry. Did have situation when 10.7 responded to copy protection differently, but that was on the Mac (brand new as well). Difference was in amount of copy protected movies, that itunes would allow to sync. 10.7 would allow 3. 11 increased that amount, don't know to what number yet.

on the side note, took me half a day to find sidebar, so ticked I was...

    Morning bump.

Desperately looking for an answer in this one.

    Evening bump.

Nobody else has even run into this problem?

I'm thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes on my desktop but gotta check and see if I'm gonna totally screw up the wife's music and stuff if I do that.

I might also try on my daughter's laptop and see if I can drag/drop there.

Another morning bump for fresh eyeballs.

Daughter was busy last night so couldn't get access to her laptop but to test but maybe anybody else can confirm?

I notice music doesn't seem to matter.  Music drags/drops easily in any iTunes, on any computer, on any i-device in our house so if anybody else tests this, music doesn't count, just .m4v files.

    TIA

First let me say "thanks" to those who at least came in here and offered an attempt!!  You guys are great!

Then, let me say that IF....(and I don't now how big that if is).....there are Apple folks onboard here that actually LOOKED at this thread and didn't consider this........shame on your pathetic selves.  (And, yes, I do believe Apple to be a pathetic mess that is getting worse every day).  Apple minus Steve = Titanic.

The answer to this problem for anyone who runs into it is.............Q-U-I-C-K-T-I-M-E!!

I was always a fan of Quicktime Alternative as I consider QT a bloated beast that just wants to piggyback along iTunes (like Safari) and just hang out.  Well, as we all know this has nothing to do with why....."This movie was not transferred because it cannot be played on this iPad"........but at some point I must have uninstalled QTAlternative and, at the same time, unticked a QT install during an iTunes upgrade (can we really call them upgrades?) ......and that's what created this problem.

    I reinstalled iTunes

Tried my daughter's new Win7 laptop (remember I was on XP) and movies still drug/dropped just fine.

So I knew the problem was within my desktop

After slicing & dicing, the only variable different was Quicktime.  I installed Quicktime and.....voila!!  Problem solved!!

So since nobody here or on another significantly tech-savy (probably moreso than here) site could come up with the solution, I truly, truly hope this helps someone in the future.

Thanks for filling us in. In "therory" QuickTime is no longer required for iTunes to work, but there may be some older file formats that rely on it. Sadly iTunes has a habit of silently ignoring some user actions without giving any clue as to what the problem might be.

Very happy for you. And very ashamed for apple guys who not only didn't fix your windows problem for you, but didn't even try to guess about QuickTime. Of course they going downhill. They always did, unlike windows and Linux. Unlike tablets that seem to be taking over the world in coupe with phones. BTW, I think I mentioned something about DRM not being a problem, didn't I? Now, not being "apple guy" proud of myself
