Q: Hardware Test Error: 4BAT / 6 / ...

Hello,

My 15'4 inch MacBook Pro fails to boot because of kernel panic error every time. Not even in safe mode.

Hardware test has detected an error: 4BAT / 6 / 40000005: 0x86d05990

Kernel trap type is 14 (page fault), BSD process name corresponding to current thread is kextd.

Does anybody know what is this all about?

Regards,

S. K.

So the problem was fixed by clearing the settings stored in PRAM/NVRAM and laptop started normally for the first time.

Still I am courious what is it about.

NVRAM contents can get corrupted if your battery is allowed to become completely depleted. If the problem was fixed by resetting your NVRAM then don't worry about it.

But apple's hardware test is still failing with the same error. Note how address at the end has only slightly changed second time. What is the problem here?

Evidently a problem still exists with your battery or your MBP's charging system. Schedule a Genius Bar visit to have it evaluated:

So mac is back from the service but only to wait for new motherboard to arrive.

It seems to be working but it is behaving strange and hardware test are reporting errors in Apple's service too. From time to time it reports 'Battery not available' but still works with or without power adapter plugged in.

So, I had a similar issue with my mid-2012 MBP these days. I recently replaced the battery and also installed a new SSD and did a dirty update to ElCap. Everything was fine for a week or so, and then while on a business trip, I woke up and saw that the battery was at 0% after being plugged in all night. After a slow/glitchy startup, I noticed that kernel_task was running at between 300-400% of CPU. I could barely move the cursor, and opening any program or webpage took an eternity. Clearing PRAM/NVRAM solved the problem for a minute, but then the problem returned. I tried to reset the SMC, but I don't think I did that correctly. I also ran OnyX and repaired some permissions and did some other general maintenance, but it didn't help much either.

I finally ran the hardware test and found the same error as the original poster. I got home last night, and swapped the old (original) battery back in, and problem solved. It had installed a third party battery, so at some point it went bad, and the result was that kernel_task was spending all its energy trying to locate a power source to charge. I've only been using this for a few hours, but it's running exactly as I would hope, in particular with a new SSD. Kernel_task is now down around 3-4%, which I assume is normal.

    Hope this helps.

All MacBook Pro etc etc model error code are found in the internet posted by many end users and techs that familiar with this issues. Most of the time you solve your own problems by taking sometime looking in the internet to look for answers.

Wish you all good luck and have a nice day!
