I just came across this thread and would like to reiterate what TMGieske has said. POSLavu is a fantasic bit of software that, in conjunction with iPad features, offers a complete, all-in-one solution. Not only does it operate as a till, allowing access to real time data from any number of sites, but also allows you to control your audio, lighting, heating and security through a single device, from anywhere with an internet connection.
There are a limited number of distributors in the UK, and currently the only distributor in the South of England currently is The IT Guys (http://www.the-itguys.co.uk/?page_id=121). Not only can we provide the hardware at discounted rates, but we will also upload your menus/product lists, install the hardware, provide training and ongoing support.
We have completed installations in the City of London Distillery, The Lazy Cow in Solihull and several other sites. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for a quote, more information or a free demo. We operate a "No Hard Sale" policy, so if you just want to have a chat and learn more, that's fine!

If you are looking for an iPad point of sale for a small restaurants or coffee shop, you should check out Lavu Lite. They are the only Free iPad point of sale on the market that is geared towards restaurants, with all the features you need. It is really intuitive and takes about 2 minutes to get the account set up, including credit card processing and you can start using it right away! I hope this helps.

Except it still has a monthly cost of $39 so dosnt really meet requirements from my original post.
In the end due to a complete lack of products that met my need I ended up using Unicenta/openbravo on an old XP PC and a VNC to the Ipad.

Although this thread is getting a little old now, I think we should throw in our tuppence worth. Intelligent Point of Sale (iPos) is the first UK home grown iPad POS software. It's a native iPad application and works offline. We cater for retail and hospitality operators with two different operating modes. The system can handle modifiers, promotions, drag and drop button layouts, drag and drop table plans, integrates with till drawers and kitchen/receipt printers plus loads more. We have free, UK based support included with every package.
Thanks for your time.
