I am using logic and I have downloaded some AU synths, pasted them into my audio, plug-ins, components folder and I can't open them, is there anything I might need to change?

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Are they 32bit or 64bit plugins?

Which ones are they and why did you have to paste them manually into the components folder... instead of the more usual "use the installer' method?

If they are 32bit plugins you must run Logic in 32bit mode at least once to validate them in the 32bit Au manager... Then you can go back to running Logic in 64bit mode and they will appear under the Software Instrument or Insert buttons (depending if they are SI's or FX plugins) under the 32bit instruments/fx sections..

I'm running in 32-bit and they are 32-bit plug-ins, I've tried with the Stillwell Olga synth and Oligarc which came with a readme which said this:

    AU:

Copy the .component bundle and the plugin's readme or manual to your

    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/ folder.

When I try to open the component folders in the finder, it doesn't know what to open them with and says to chose app, and won't let me chose Logic, I've tried looking for them in Logics AU manager but still no luck

Well, the instructions are incorrect to begin with, so....

    Quit Logic

You need to copy the component files to your root drive's Library not your Users library....

    Example.... Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/components/

and not...  /Users/your user name/ etc......

Now start Logic and it should scan and validate the new plugins...

After Logic has completed scanning the plugins.. open a new project and select Software instrument as a new track

Then left click and hold on the Software instrument Button and look down the drop down menu that opens for AU Instruments and inside there should be your plugins listed uder the developer's name.

You cannot and should not try and run the component files themselves.. that won't work...

Btw.. assuming you are running legal version the full (and paid for ) versions.. make sure you are installing the Beta versions as the last non beta versions do not work with Logic 9... They will not validate... because they are extremely old plugins...

Contact Stillwell for access to the betas...

The demo version of Olga does however work with Logic Pro 9 and validates (I just downloaded/installed it as described in my earlier post... and tested it..)

Warning: Even the betas are at least 3 years old now so they might still not work... Again, contact Stillwell for help if this is the case...

The 'cracked' versions are at least 4 years old and probably will not work/validate with OS X 10.7 or 10.8 and Logic Pro 9...

See this thread for more info on Betas...

Ahh yeah I gathered that seen as there was no plug-ins setting and I've had them in the components folder under the Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/components/

I go down to the AU instruments-Apple and it comes to DLSMusicDevice which takes to me a page with just Apple Sound Bank Synthesizer with a dropdown menu that is greyed out - properties with stream from disk, restrict CPU load and render quality. There is a drop down menu at the top next to bypass and compare, which is the same as any other page which takes me to the finder for folders and I can't open them from there either. I'm really quite confused

Follow the instructions I gave you exactly.....

Make sure you are running Logic in 32bit mode .. and not the default 64bit mode... at least once to validate the 32bit plugins.. It sounds like you are running Logic in 64bit mode (To check go to Logic Pro menu/About Logic and look next to the version number and if it says 64bit then you are running Logic in the wrong mode)

Again, I just tested here using the method above, and Olga installed and showed up under AU Instruments/Schwa/Olga

I've followed them exactly, I'm in 32-bit and it still only comes up with the DLSMusicDevice. This has been my problem the whole time :/

I've just clicked download additinal content incase that might be the problem but I don't think it is..all there is to download is 'Jam Pack' content like the ocestra and remix tools. The Audio Units manager still won't pick up the components either

...and you are absolutely sure you placed the component file in the root library and not the user library? Go there and check for certain that the component file exists...

Are you installing the demo version?

Yes they are in the Macintosh HD, into Library, Audio, Plug-ins, Components. Yes I downloaded the evaluation copy of the Audio Unit. I was told my my college tutor that this would work and I do not have to buy it

I don't know what you have done.. but as i said, following the instructions i gave earlier.. the demo version works fine here . The only ways it won't work are..

    1) You are running Logic in 64bit mode

    2) The component file in not in the correct folder.

    3) You did not quit Logic and restart it to rescan

    4) You did not create a Software Instrument track (Audio tracks won't work)

I've tried every other way without success.. Only those four possibilities prevented it from working for me..

Finally, can you confirm it is not showing up under the Audio Manager under Schwa?

When you left click and hold on the Software Instrument Button... do you see the other Apple software synths like ES1.. ES2.. EXS24 and so on?

Ahhhhh I see what I've done. Instead of putting the component folders straight into the component folder, I put the whole folder in! We learn from our mistakes!! Thanks a lot for your help I can understand it was probably quite tedious

Good to hear you got it up and running!

No worries.. we all have to find our way around this stuff at some point in the learning curve...

    Cheers!
