Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Unless you can find an app in the App store that will do that for you, you don't. File Transfer is not one of the BT profiles included in iOS. Sorry.

You don't, it's not supported - bluetooth on the iPad is aimed at devices such as headphones and keyboards (iOS bluetooth profiles : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3647). You can use cable connection to your computer, some apps support transfer via your wifi network, Dropbox, email attachments etc

So you mean there is no way to send from / and to send to, wow! Well, couldnt find any app that can do that, just wondering no one thought about this fucntion, it could be so useful!

Sure, you can send by email. There are also apps that will allow you to access your computer such as Cloud Connect. You can store apps in a DropBox or box.net account and download them to your iOS device. You can sync through iTunes.

I'm sure someone at Apple did think of it. Apple just chose not to include the option. Transferring files over BT is slow and, as I understand it, not terribly secure. If you feel that Apple should include this feature, you can submit feedback to them. Who know.....?

Thank u all, cant get it why its being made so difficult to transfer files from and to the iPad while there are possibilities to do so with other devices!!!

Personally, between email, transfer using through iTunes, or using DropBox or box.net or something like Cloud Connect, I find I have far more ways of transferring files than I need. I hardly think that, just because, of all the many ways there are to transfer files to the iPad, not being able to transfer files over BT is a big deal. It certainly doesn't make transferring files difficult. Besides, transferring files over BT is too slow for me.

But to do all that kind of transfers, one needs to be connected! If one isnt or the connection with a iPad is too weak vs with a Mac with the exact same WIFI / 3G connection than one isnt able to transfer quickly files i.e. meetings etc!  Any solution to this kind of situation?

I would very much like for there to be a way to quickly transfer a small block of text from iPad to iMac without copying and pasting it into an email/creating a small separate doc and using iTunes/using the cloud or dropbox or using Notes. Bluetooth worked fine for me between my laptop and iMac, quick and easy. WiFi would be better.

I keep a large journal on my iPad using Pages (I'm a writer) and sometimes I just want to use/send a small selection of text from it to the iMac. It would be really nice if I could select the text and see in the popup options something like 'send to iMac' or other device.

There's an app called Cloud Clipboard in the App Store that might be what you need.

If you are running OSX 10.8.2 on your iMac, you can use iCloud and the Notes applications on your iPad and iMac to transfer the block of text in a note between the two devices.  I do this with simple notes and lists.  In your settings on each device, make sure Notes is turned ON under the iCloud tab.

Thank you Meg St._Clair and Tgara.

I'm avoiding using iCloud and Dropbox at the moment due to security issues.

This may seem a little absurd but I'm doing it on princple due to the fact that both of these services are open to intrusion by the US Admin. Privacy is important to me.

I looked at Clipboard Manager and Cloud Clip, both would do what I want but I really don't want my stuff on someone elses servers. I'd prefer something local over WiFi or Bluetooth.

I'm fairly sure your text clippings are of no interest whatsoever to the US Admin, unless you're a known international terrorist. Virtually all servers in all countries are open to "intrusion" from that countries government, if required by law.

However, if you're really worried about security, both local WiFi and Bluetooth file transfers can very easily be intercepted by anyone in range and using free utilities found by a simple Google Search. Just be sure to watch out for black vans parked outside when you do such transfers.

Presumably, to avoid having your stuff on someone elses servers you run your own email server, so you could send text clippings via email over your own network to avoid them escaping onto the wider internet.

This will apparently do what you want over your own wifi network though.

Hi Julian, no I'm not a 'terrorist' - as I said, my oposition to cloud services is 'on principle'.

Yes, as you point out I am open to hackers and govt agencies (same thing really) every time I send an email, particularly with an att., when I use wifi, bluetooth or my wireless internet connection.

Thanks for the link to Pastebot, looks great.

In iOS you can't send files via Bluetooth
