Macbook pro won't shut down

OK so i have a 13" Macbook Pro fall 2011 model running osx 10.7.5 and I have been experiencing very peculiar bugs while using my computer. First and most frustrating is sometimes when I shut the lid it wont go into sleep mode. it will stay on until I open it and then sometimes the screen will come right back on and sometimes it goes to sleep. second, it won't shut down. When I try to shut it down in an attempt to reboot when acting funky, it will stay on the white screen with the little circular dashed loading sign on the screen for hours or until I force shut it down. third it won't update. when the software update window pops up I try to update the programs and it will freeze on the loading message moving items into place. this happens with all the updates (I have tried each one individually) fourth, time machine won't work or is incredibly slow and eventually freezes. Now these are still occurring after my attempts to fix it by resetting the SMC (which solved some of the issues like it would freeze 100% on startup and other debilitating things like that) ( the computer did also shut down once and has been better about going to sleep since resetting the SMC). all of the bugs happening now do not affect the performance as I can still use the computer fine. I have a virus protection program (eset) which I run on occasion but not all the time. I am a pretty savvy computer user and I don't have much data on the hard-disk, I don't crowd the desktop, I don't have a bunch of programs running in the background, etc. I am inclined to reset the PRAM but am not sure as I am somewhat new to mac OS and its processes. any help would be much appreciated.     Repair Permissions, Repair Disk from Recovery mode by Reboot holding the command-R.

    Uninstall it.  You do not need it.  Macs do not get viruses.  This could be the reason you are having so much problems.  After uninstalling, repair permissions and restart your computer.

    If you can get it to restart and hold down the "D" key you can run a diagnostic. Run the Extended or Advanced diagnostic. This will tell you if you have any system errors.

     

    You can also try booting to the recovery HD to run a disk repair on your filesystem if there are any problems with that. I would recommend having a back up of your data before doing so.

     

    To boot to the Recovery Partition you can do it a couple of ways. First, if you can restart your computer, you can hold down the option key. This will give you the option to choose the Recovery HD and boot that way. You can also hold down cmd + R as it is starting up as well. This will boot directly into the Recovery partition.

    tried to perform the diagnostics(when I held the d key a white screen came up for like 3-4min then it started up?)

     

    Did you use the DVD that originally came w/your computer to run the hardware test?  What were the results of the test?

    Replacement Apple Hardware Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.

    Also I have been running the repair permissions option and it finds a bunch of issues then it says it fixes them so I restart but when I run it again after restart the same exact things come back up. Im assuming that's not normal.

    Also if I would end up wiping my hard drive could I just open an old back up from time machine on my external hard drive or do I need the original boot cd?
