According to Mactracker, you can have a 250 GB 5400-rpm HD and up to 6GB (2 x 3GB) 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM with Mac OS X 10.7.4 (Lion).
Don't know which brands are good, but generally the better known ones should be lower risk (hopefully someone else can recommend something).

For a real boost in performance replace the hard drive with a solid state drive. This web page leads you through it. (Note, prices are lower now than quoted in that article, but still significantly higher than for rotating platter dirves.)
A RAM upgrade will give some performance boost, but negligible in comparison to the ssd. No, you do not have to increase the RAM.
Finally let me say that I have done this hard drive replacement on 3 macs, including one as old as yours, and think it's one of the best things you can do for performance.

so your suggesting get anssd drive, going by the other reply that would be a 250gb ssd drive
and leave my ram as it is ?
sorry to sound dim but if i hit google looking for an ssd drive for my mac what would i search ?
id also eventually like to replace the caseing on my mac as its cracked where the magnets are this has bin replaced ages ago when it was under apple care but not its out and id like to do it again.
my mac dose what can only be described as "aeroplane mode" it makes wiring sounds like its about to take off it dose this in conjunction with going reli slow taking forever to complete the simplest task,
a majour one is when im trying to work on photoshop, it dosent like this any more.
im always really on it with keeping my mac clear of junk ive always bin anal with wipeing and reinstalling it when it gets sluggish, the main reason my hd is rammed is i have 8 month old twins and have a 75gb file on my desktop of videos and pictures of them (waiting to download a video converter software to shrink the videos) although i have two external 500gb drives with coppys of this folder on i also keep a copy on my mac as it gets used quite a bit and im paranoid about loosing it ... i would have a million externals with a copy on if i had my way (paranoid woman lol)
i apreciate your help =]

solid state drive. Various vendors. I found some good buys on Tiger Direct, and one through Amazon. A great price for a 256 gb would be about $150. Found it once on a sale.

I have a friend who is in to this type of thing. I will ask him. This is not something I have ever done.
• "aeroplane mode"
OK - your sound effects are very likely the death throes of a failing hard drive. (Photoshop does extensive writes and reads to a hard drive.) You do have a back up, and it seems the switch to a SSD is coming at the right time.
A tip on Photoshop - you can designate one of your external drives as the PS primary scratch disk. (Photoshop / Preferences / Plug ins and scratch disks.) But that means that drive has to be available when you are using PS. But it will save wear and tear of the boot drive, which is the default choice for the scratch disk. Rule of thumb is to have 3 times as much space on the scratch disk as the file your are photoshopping.

Yes. You will be replacing a 2.5" drive. You will also run into descriptions SATA, SATAII, etc. The roman numerals indicate the speed at which data is transferred to and from the SSD. This is of no concern to you. Like mine, your Macbook is the slowest SATA there is, and the faster SSDs will adjust to that. Any flavour of SATA will work for you.
• their also all samsung
There are many manufacturers - Intel, Crucial, OCZ, .... Shop around at places like Best Buy, Tiger Direct, etc. I have only been using them for a few months, and cannot vouch for the superiority of any one brand. I made my buying decisions on price alone.
• also whats the difference between a normal hd as recomended by the first person and an SSD drive,
Hard drives that are not solid state store information on magnetic discs - platters. These spin, 5400, 7200, even 10,000 rpm. They work fine and have worked fine for decades. Solid state drives are like memory sticks - no moving parts. Therefore they are faster - much faster - for both reading from, and writing to, the drive.
What we do not know - because they have not been around that long, is how long they will last. Fortunately as SSD's become more and more widely used quality and reliability will go up and prices will go down. Right now, comparing equivalent gB's, SSDs are about 4 times more expensive than the traditional drive.
• sorry for all the questions
That's why these forums were created - to answer each other's questions, and to pool our knowledge.
One more thing - look also for a 2.5 inch hard drive external enclosure. They can cost as little as $5, certainly no more than $10. It will make your life easier when you are swapping the old for the new and transferring data.
