Keep in mind, the new iTunes is in a different format.  To revert to a more familiar format:

In the top menu bar in iTunes, select

    1.  View

    2.  Show sidebar

Is the device now on the more familiar left hand pane or still not recognized?

Did you ever fix this problem> I have the exact same problem. I have 2 iPads (long story!) and an iPhone. All used to show up in iTunes. One iPad disappeared. I ejected the other one (because it wasn't shwoing up as being able to do wi-fi sysc according to the ipad display itself, although I think it realy was), but that iPad never showed up again in iTunes. I just now tried restarting modem, computer and iPad (as another post suggested) and now the iPhone has disapeared too!

    And then there were none...!

Go to section five -- i fixed the problem noticing the Apple USB device driver had deleted. I took the phot on my iphone (home and wake buttons) and replugged the usb in -- found the driver and updated the software.
