Ok, so I'm really annoyed with this. I just got an apple tv and it was working fine, and it still is but when I came to the home sharing part that's where I had issues. I'm in a dorm so I cannot get to the router, and the internet that I am connected to as well as the apple tv is connected to, is working fine here so I dont see why I would need to do that anyway. I went to turn on home share on my itunes, and I did that just fine and it seemed like everything is working, so I go to the computers section on apple tv and it will not connect! Nothing is showing up at all, but "to access your itunes library on apple tv, turn on home sharing in itunes on your computer ..." and I did that.

I have logged in and out many times, restarted and all that but it is not showing up and I'm more than annoyed at this. Please help if you can!!!

Thanks, but I tried all of that and I tried again and it's still not connecting anything. It's beyond frustrating.

    HI There,

Just hooked up my Apple Tv I got for christmas yesterday.  Everything is working fine except for home sharing.  I too have tried everything....will probably end up calling apple for support.  Good luck.  I'll check back to see if anything works for you.

When all else fails, reboot your router.

Ok, so it's not just me then! Like you said, everything is working fine except home sharing and calling apple is the last thing I want to do at this point, but I'll keep trying in the meantime and good luck in getting yours set up too.

Glen Ferguson, I am in a dorm room so I do not have access to a router. It's provided for us.

Have you tried connecting your computer to the Apple TV with an ethernet cable instead of wifi.

Whe staying in Hotels they sometimes have some login screen requiring details for logging in.

This method works for me in that scenario. Worth a shot anyway.

I too have 3rd Gen Apple TV which worked fine then randomly began having this issue. I do not have any firewall or alike software and normally a simple reboot usually help; in this case failed! I configured DHCP reservations for Apple Ethernet & WiFi connections via my wireless router, manually assigned the addresses in Apple TV Network preferences, restarted the Apple TV device, I'm now able to use home sharing via WiFi but ethernet not ethernet. To troubleshoot the home sharing via ethernet connection, I disabled my IMBP WiFi Card, connected both MBP and Apple TV to my router using ethernet cables then confirmed home sharing worked. Additionally, based on the Apple's TCP/UPD chart and using Terminal, Activity Monitor, and Network Utility I was able to verify daap uses 3689 (iTunes Sharing) and not as 5353 (Bonjour, AirPlay, Home Sharing, Printer Discovery, Back to My Mac) as the chart recommends.

Being on different networks in the past I had no issues or who knows, perhaps overlooked. What caused it? OSX update? iTunes bug? not sure.

Conclusion: Both devices (Apple TV + iPhone, iPad, MacBook) should be on the same netowrk (Wired or Wirelessly) and should work just fine.

I too am having the same issue. I used it perfectly fine last night and then this morning, it decided not to work. I can still push my movies from my computer to my tv but I can't access my computer from the apple tv itself.

    Have you tried my suggestions?

I got mine to work by just restoring my apple tv to its factory settings.

Thank you for your suggestion, I appreciate it and I tried but it's still not working.

I guess I can try to restore it to the factory settings once again, but I have no clue to why it's so difficult because it shouldn't be lol

Sorry WiseWun....that is all way above my head.  I may try restoring apple tv and see if that works.  Thanks for the info though.

Educational networks or those in educational residences often employ security measures that you wouldn't find at home. It may well simply be the case that homesharing is blocked by your network. Have a word with the network administrators, they may be able to shed more light on this for you.
