Well I guess that explains it in great detail ..... Assuming that you have sound in the music app - and if you do not have sound in the music app - don't be afraid to actually type a few words that describes your problem ....... but anyway ......

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.

System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.

Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.

If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.

If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

I am also having the same problem, but when I have tried to check the settings above by double tapping the home key and swiping to the right, in the section where the volume is located, my slider is completely blank, and without a slider button..I have tried to restart, I have reset all settings, I have made sure thru settings and the double tapped home key that mute was not enabled, and am positive that it is not.. I cannot get any sound to movies, music, YouTube, applications ect. My iPad2 is 4 months old.. The only way that I get any sound is by going to settings-sounds-ringer and alerts, and I can hear the preset ringtone when I slider the volume controls.. My side button does not work to control any volume, and I all my volume bars on any application are blank or either don't show up. Please help. Thanks for your time..

I'm having the same sound/lock rotation problems with my iPad 2.

Please explain to me the following as per your comments:

If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.

If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

    1. I don't want to lock my screen rotation BUT would like sound, which task bar are you referring to where I find the task bar at the bottom ....

I just want sound! And no locked screen

    Cheers

I have seen others post this same problem and I don't know why it occurs. You could try restoring from a backup and see if the sound returns. If that doesn't help, you may need to restore the iOS software. But first things first.

    Read this for more information.

The task bar is at the bottom of the screen. When you double tap the home button you see the task bar at the bottom like the screenshot below.

I use the side switch to lock the screen rotation on my iPad settings. So then the switch to control system sounds is in the task bar at the bottom. The speaker icon on the left indicates that my system sounds are not muted. If they were muted, there should be a line through the speaker.

If you have restored the iPad and still have no luck, yoy should probably get Apple involved now. Take your iPad to an Apple Store Genius Bar and let them take a look at it.

If you haven't restored the software and I'm reading your post wrong, try restoring from a backup like I suggested above to YungBless1986.

YougBless 1986, did you ever resolve your issue? Your post exactly describes the problem I have with me own 4S.

Your 'Airplay ' or 'Apple TV' mode is on.  Shut it off and switch back to iPad mode.

How to shut off airplay mode?

When you're on your iPad and in iTunes, you'll see at top of screen on right the icon for choosing either 'airplay' or 'iPad' while viewing movies or listening to music.  Your sound on the iPad remains off as long as you are still clicked in the 'airplay' mode.  Unclick 'airplay' and click 'iPad.'
