iPhoto should see the photos that weren't orginally synced from a computer i.e. those taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites.
To copy photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.

On the other thread, someone suggested it might be possible to add the photos to my Photostream and 'transfer' them that way - is this a solution also? If so, what is the best way to add a large number of photos to the Photostream?

I think I now understand why the photos didn't transfer - which means I'm having to do this manually now via photostream. A bit of a pain. Once I have finished this 'tidying up' I think I need to explore how best to back up these photos in case I suffer another burglary!
