Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can sync it back afterwards, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

Jan 24, 2013 11:15 AM in response to Winston Churchillby pedroexuk,hey winston, thanks for the prompt reply. I get the pascode up ok on the apple tv but in itunes the Apple tv still isn't showing up. It used to appear just to the left of "devices" in the preferences tab but not any more. I know the apple tv is seeing my network ok as i can connect onto facebook etc with it. It seems to be the pc cant see the apple tv and visa versa

Jan 30, 2013 11:30 AM in response to Winston Churchillby pedroexuk,hi i've checked the windows firewall and that's allowing itunes ok , i'm using AVG 2013 for antivirus and that seems to be fine too. Any other ideas anyone as the Apple TV gen 1 is still not showing itself to my pc.
