I was having this same problem, but not with my iCloud account. I called Apple Support, and she narrowed the problem down to my Keychain. We went into Keychain Access, located the login item item for that smtp server, deleted that item from Keychain Access, and then went back and re-entered the login information in Mail preferences, and that fixed it.

This helped me too. I had to go back and reset everything from password to in and out going ISP info. After deleting and logging off and cleaning off everything then reentering all my info it started sending backed up messages instantly. This link helped alot. Not impressed with the mobile me program at all. considering going back to my ISP email server for the future. Just to many issues with the MM software and no phone number or possible way to contact tech support so its useless to me with out it.

I have the same problem sending emails from my apple mail account. I can receive them but they won't send. It is an IMAP in and SMTP out. I've used connection doctor to reset all my settings, tried all the different suggested ports, SSL on and off, deleted and re-established the key chain. It used to work but without and changes made that I can reconsile to email it has just stopped working. Any suggestions will be greatfully received.
