Select the manually manage music and click the Apply button. Pick one song in your library and drag it all the way to the right until the iPhone appears. Drop it on the iPhone icon. If this works, select the rest of the songs and repeat.

Make sure your iPhone is plug into the computer. Open iTunes and click on the iPhone button on the top right next to the iTunes Store button. In the iPhone page, switch to the Music tab and make sure you've checked the box that says "Sync Music". If it is not, do so now and click the sync button on the bottom right.

Thank you for responding - I have tried this to no avail. When I expand my device in the devices pane and highlight/select music or a playlist the tracks appear in the main pane ' greyed out ' in addition to selecting music manually I have also tried checking the 'sync music ' option on music tab and then trying both entire music library and selected playlist on separate occasions

yes that was the first thing I tried as this would be my normal method - however it didnt work so I have tried various combinations of selecting playlist, manually adding - restoring from backup making sure software is up to date in both itunes and on my phone resetting my phone and my MAC ....... no success on any front

Using = iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.2, itunes 11.01.1 per original post. In addition I have tried to download music already purchased from itunes store and it wont allow this either nor will it allow me to purchase and download - just says Unable to Download Song
