I have a mid 2010 Macbook white. I was on it about a half hour ago and the screen just went black. The backlight still turns on, but there's no picture. Ive tried turning it off and on again, and I hear the Mac chime, but no picture. If I wait a while, I can log on, and if I press the volume up and down keys I can hear that noise so I know it still boots into the OS.

I don't have the kind of money to replace this computer right now. Does anyone have any idea what to do? I'm freaking out. I need this for school.

A friend thinks it's an issue with the graphics card. Is there any way to test if he's right without buying the $30 Mini DisplayPort connector? I'd rather not have to buy it, only to find out I'm gonna need to get $1000 for a new computer.

Try resetting the pram on the mac. You hold down Option , Command and the letters P and R all at the same time. Wait until you hear the startup chime twice then let go of those keys. It will reset the NVRAM in the mac and 8/10 times will fix that issue.

This is one of the 2 times that it is not fixing that issue

Could also try resetting the smc unplug everything from the macbook except the power adaptor then on the left side of your keyboard hold SHIFT, CONTROL and OPTION. Simultaniuosly hold the power button for 4 seconds then release. If you do it right the computer should remain powered off then try starting it. If that doesn't fix it you'll have to take it in for diagnostics to see whats up with the video card. If thats the problem it shouldnt cost as much as you think. Hopefully thats all it is.
