My mate doesn't have a PC so he backed up his old iPhone 4 at my house last week. He received his new iPhone 5 today, but EE made a mistake and didnt package the SIM with it. A courier is coming around tomorrow with the SIM card. He left his new phone with me so that I can restore it from the previous backup so tomorrow he'll just have to insert the SIM and he's sorted.

Well it was a nice plan but I've fallen at the first hurdle, when I plug it into iTunes it says it needs a SIM to activate.

My question is, would it matter if I put my iPhone 5 SIM card in there just for the activation or should we just wait until my friend gets his own SIM?

should be ok , but it's nothing to wait a day just to be sure, no ?

    Thanks for the reply

Well I'm extremely busy tomorrow, where as I'm totally free to sort the whole thing out for him tonight. So just to make sure, it doesn't matter what SIM card is used when activating no? It doesn't HAVE to be the SIM card that EE sends him tomorrow does it?

I suppose I could just leave it, but his other phone is knackered so the quicker I can get it done for him the less time he's left without a phone

Sorry for the double post, but can somebody confirm this for me please?

When activating the iPhone 5 for the first time, would it matter if I just put my own SIM card in there or does it need to be the actual SIM. I suppose it depends on what the activation process actually does "under the hood" (which I have no idea about). During activation does apple register the phone to the specific SIM card? I'm only asking because the last thing I want to do is botch up my mates brand new phone

if you bought the phone locked to a specific company, only a sim from that company will activate the phone.

Thanks again mate, I needed up just leaving it. Better to be safe then sorry when the phone isn't even mine to begin with. It's not like its my fault that my friend will be without a phone for a day or two more
