The new partion for installing Windows on my I-Mac has been going on for hours... Is this normal...? Can the problem be that I had a previos Windows install that BootCamp Assistant erased..?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities,

Well, this can be explained... It seems that your Mac is finding a hard time to find an instance of free and contiguous space on your hard drive to make a Windows 7 partition. Unfortunately, there are only two ways to solve this issue.

    • Defragment your drive, which is something that can't be done in OS X without a third party utility such as iDefrag which costs money.

    • Format your Mac's internal drive (by zeroing out data), reinstall OS X, and place all settings back. This works because of the fact that OS X will install everything in a contigous fashion in your HDD.

For option number two, I would suggest backing up your Mac with TimeMachine and after formatting and installing OS X on your drive, use Migration Assistance to place your data back into your Mac. Then, you can use Bootcamp Assistant and this time it should work without issue.

    Hope you find this helpful!

iDefrag rarely corrects this, and indeed costs money ..... No refunds either.
