Ok, I have been using Apple for some years now and have spent loads getting up to date kit.  I want to give my old Iphone 3G to a family member to get them into using Apple.  Snag is they cant download any apps as the firmware will not support it.

The phone is like new, as I look after my kit.  Why wont Apple do firmware updates?

Maybe I should be looking for an alternative band...

If you are using iOS 4.2.1 on the 3G, that's it. You cannot upgrade. The 3G came out over 4 years ago and was discontinued over 2 1/2 years ago. If you want to use the latest software and iOS6.0.1 you will need to get a new phone.

It's too old to run the current version of iOS. If you can find a 4 1/2 year old Android phone that can run the current version of Android, I'm sure people would love to hear about it...
