I have an iPod Classic 80GB. Its a good few years old and has been sitting in a drawer of late as I have enough music on my iPhone for most days.

When I took it out recently to synch it the battery was dead. I charged it for a little while before a message popped up saying it needed to be restored via iTunes.

I connected it to my PC and iTunes also said it needed to be restored, so off it went. A few clicks and whirrs later a new message appeared, telling me not to disconnect. I left it to do its thing but even 24 hours later it was still sitting there. Then I noticed it wasn't showing as a device in iTunes so I disconnected it and reconnected it to the PC. Still no show. I checked Explored (Windows Vista) and there was no drive showing there either. I can see it as a device when I check via the control panel and if I delete the drivers Windows reinstalls them when I reconnect. However, I cannot get beyond the "connect to iTunes to restore message"

I've tried the usual Menu/Select and Select/Back combinations to kick it into life or at least into another state but no joy there either.

I suspect the drive is on its last legs and it may be goodnight for my iPod but if anyone can suggest anything to restore it I would be very grateful.

iPod classic, Windows Vista
