I've had a lot of Kernel Panics lately (unresponsive CPU, failed to respond to interrupts) and I've heard from multiple sources that this is likely an overheating problem (likely as one time it happened was ages ago when I fell asleep and my macbook slid onto my duvet, completely blocking the vents).

My fans are very clogged. You can see this just even my looking at the vent and the dust around the holes. My question is, is it safe to just take a hoover, point it at the vent and just try to suck the dust out through it? It seems like a good idea but I have this horrible mental image of the suction causing the fan blades to spin super - fast and break.

Anyone ever done this? Is it ok or will it cause the kind of damage I'm imagining it might?
