In Mac OS X 10.8.2 I find I cannot sort by file name when I try to add an attachment to an email, insert a graphic into Pages, etc. I like the fact that files are presented by date, since that makes working on files I just created/edited easier to find, but I DO need to be able to look up content alphabetically. Control-clicking on the date headers brings up several options for sorting: kind, size, comments, label, etc. Everything you would expect EXCEPT file name. Why on earth would I want to sort by comments but not alphabetically? I can't believe Apple screwed up like this. Short of pasting the file name into the comments field, does anyone know of a solution? Thanks.

I am going to guess that you are asking about Open dialogs in List view. Control-clicking on a column head does not bring up options for sorting. It brings up options for columns to include in the list view. Name is not listed because it is not optional -- it is always included. Sort by any column by clicking on the column head. If the heads are not selectable, then click on the Arrange button and select "None". The Arrange button is the one with a grid icon, between the icon/list/column/cover-flow view selector and the folder pull-down menu.

    ?

The Finder works exactly the same way. Customize the toolbar if you don't have an Arrange button. Or use the menu View > Arrange By. Standard Open and Save dialogs also work the same way.
