If I receive an email on my hotmail account and I read it on my computer, it isn't marked as 'read' on my iPhone. Instead, I have to go to my email application and open the email manually. This also happens the other way around: if I read an email from my hotmail account on my iPhone, I have to open it on my computer to mark it as 'read' there.

This is really annoying when you get like 10 Facebook emails or something in a short amount of time.

With Gmail this is not the case: if I read something on my iPhone, it's also read on my computer and vice versa.

Is there any way to fix this issue?

Thanks,

Joffysloffy.

iPhone 4, iOS 5, PC with Windows 7 64-bit.

A Gmail account can be accessed as a POP, IMAP, or Exchange account with the iPhone's Mail app and as a POP or IMAP account with an email client on a computer. If you are accessing the account as an IMAP or Exchange account with the iPhone and as an IMAP account with an email client on your computer, the account's server stored mailboxes are kept synchronized with the server with both email clients.

A Hotmail account can be accessed as a POP or Exchange account with the iPhone's Mail app. I don't know if it is possible to access the account as an Exchange account with an email client on your computer. If you aren't accessing the account as an Exchange account with the iPhone's Mail app, the account's Inbox mailbox is not being kept synchronized with the server.

Accessing the account as an Exchange account with the iPhone's Mail provides for what you want. If not working, contact Hotmail customer or technical support.

I'm accessing Hotmail via the iPhone 5's Mail and they are not updating as "read" either direction.

You are accessing a Hotmail account via the iPhone's Mail app as what type of account?

And email is not updating as read in either direction with what? Are you accessing the account as an Exchange account with an email client on your computer?

Well, part of the problem is I understand so little, I can't even probably answer your questions.

I set up Hotmail using Mail by clicking on Apple's provided "Hotmail" option, not "Microsoft Exchange."  This is where the problem began, i.e., reading emails on my laptop or vice versa on my iPhone would not cause the other venue to show as "read."

Per this article, I sent up Hotmail as an Exchange account.  http://www.macworld.com.au/print/16006  This seems to have rectified the problem.

    Thanks for the help.
