Why are you not on 10.6.8? That's the top free update to 10.6.
Your Safari then should be 5.1.7.

Thanks for the info! I have gone to the Apple site and tried to find how to download these two upgrades, but so far without success. How do I do this? Sorry for the ignorance here!

Go up to the black Apple icon in the upper right hand corner of your screen. Select it to get the drop down menu, and click on "Software Update." It will take a little time, but it will come up with any OS updates.
A quicker way for right now would be to click on the link below for info &download for the 10.6.8 COMBO update. That should also update your Safari.
