Q: I have a 20 inch iMac8,1 with 1GB (serial # W8******ZE2) as backup to my iMac 27. I would like to know how much memory I can add to this model and how much it would cost and is it worth it. The machine runs like new and there is no reason to replace it.

I have asked the moderator to remove  your serial number, it's dangerous to incorporate personal information into a public forum. I'd recommend visiting Crucial's website or www.macsales.com to buy RAM, your machine wil accomodate up to 6GB of RAM. 1x2GB DIMM and 1x4GB DIMM.

20" iMac 8,1 can support up to 6gb of ram.  The cost depens on the manfacturer you purchase it from.  Different brands have different prices.  It is only worth it if your use calls for more ram.

Your iMac can take 6 GBs of RAM Max..

Purchase and install the Max. 6 GBs of RAM

RAM for these Macs is rerelatively cheap.

Here are the RAM specs for your model iMac.

6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots2 - 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM

Purchase reliable Mac RAM from online Mac RAM vendors Crucial memory or OWC (macsales).

    Good Luck!

Thank you very much for the quick support... I only want to upgrade so I can upgrade OSX and keep it current with my 27.. My wife uses the 20 and it's just easier to keep them the same...

    Then install the Max. RAM

OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion uses a lot more CPU, GPU, RAM and hard drive resources.

OS X 10.8 will need all of this RAM to keep your wife's iMac running smoothly.

    Good Luck!
