When I open my Aperture Library on my MacBook Pro 13" (8GB of memory), it spends between 5 and 10 minutes in Processing... mode, during which time the application is unusable.

Any ideas what it is doing?

Can you get to the Activity Viewer while Aperture is processing?

From the main menu bar: Window > Show Activity.   What does it say?

Does Aperture launch immediately, if you launch it with the "Shift" key held down? That will defer the generation of  previews on start-up. If this will make Aperture launch faster, you may have imported an image or video, that cannot be processed. In that case I'd turn on the "Activity Viewer" and select all images you imported most recently and try "Photos > Update Previews". Then watch the Activity Viewer, and see, for which image or video the processing will hang.

Another problem could be a corruption of the Aperture library. I'd try to repair the library and/or the permissions.

    Hi Léonie

That was a huge help - thank you.

Holding down the shift key instantly opened the library.

I am now checking each project in turn and trying "Photos > Update Previews".

I have already found one or two projects with issues.

How do I identify the image in error and correct?

    Thanks

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

if you keep the "Activity" window open, while building previews, you should see the name of the image currently being processed at the bottom of the window. For problematic images the same name should be displayed for a longer time and apparently hang.

If you find a suspicious image, export the original and try to open it in another program, Preview or Photoshop. Perhaps this way you can convert it to another format and fix the problem this way.

    Many thanks Léonie

All solved (and helped me understand more about Aperture).
