going back to imovie 06hd is a lossless format and when i output to idvd
No there are NO Loss less format for VIDEO-DVD as they all follow Standard to be playable on standard DVD-Players and this is sort of .mpeg2 code.
Yes You can store short .dv movies onto a DATA-DVD (for storage or sending to other editor) - but this will only play on a Computer. 1 hour of DV is about 13.5Gb so on a 4.7Gb You can store approx. 20 minutes.
I use iMovie HD6 and iDVD'11 (7.1.2) and this is best quality I can make. (or I use FinalCut E or Pro - still best possible result I can figure out)
In iMovie HD6 project there is
And this is the same as in my miniDV tape Camera.
BUT on the produced DVD there is a much lower Quality ! !
as this is sort of .mpeg2 code
So to preserve material I do
• Save my miniDV tapes
• Save .dv on external hard disk
Then I've got 100% if I ever need it again.

Joining this a bit late but just trying to avoid some confusion on my part.
You mention that you have recorded on mini DV tape. Is this recording done in DV format or HDV format ? The reason I am asking is because two weeks previously you were asking about using iDVD for burning HD material in your question about producing wedding videos. The advice given here may depend on which format you have recorded in.
A. I don't know - I have not tested in 100%. One get material over but if every line is there is to be investigated.
B. As I understands it - Importing to iMovie Event's is said to keep 100% - but when moving to Project the every second line is lost - due to ability to keep speed in the editing process.
