the likely reason is that they wanted to make the iphone5 thinner and that would be troublesome with the old
which they have stuck with for 11years in their defence
11 years ago my monitor had a vga connector
then came DVI and the HDMI and Displayport

Yes. So that the size of the internal iPhone components can be reduced, and so that the new iPod nano could be made smaller, and so that the plug can be inserted either way up, and so that all the latest announced products share the same connector (and therefore chargers).
This is the first time in a decade Apple have changed the connector.
How many different chargers would you have had if you had purchased devices by Samsung, Nokia, LG. Motorola etc. etc.

Just because other companies change their chargers more frequently doesn't make it ok for apple to do it, not even once in a decade. For many disillusioned apple owners its the final straw...
