I think the Apps thing is a red herring. The iPod Classic cannot use Apps and iTunes should not be putting any of them onto it.
However, Other is files usually that have become corrupted. There will always be a small amount of Other on your iPod, but 35Gb is not small! The usual remedy for this, if a Sync doesn't sort it out, is to do a Restore iPod.
The Restore iPod command can be found on the iPod/Summary pane. Be aware though, that this will erase everything on the iPod and then put back on it only what is in your iTunes Library.

Many thanks for your prompt response and, having done as you suggested, it worked!
I have re-loaded all my music and now have over 40gb free!
This was my first use of the Apple Forum and I am very impressed.
