Got a MacBook Pro a while ago.

I used to make videos with windows movie maker and when I hit the space bar it pauses at the moment being played (e.g. I hit space at 3:45 and the guiding line stops at 3:45) but in iMovie when I hit the space bar it goes back to the start of the picture frame. Is there anyway (key?) to make the video pause precisely at the point being played? I need this for accurate picture transition.. Thank you!

That is very odd behaviour. When I hit spacebar the playhead stops immediately at the pause point, just as you describe happens in Windows Movie Maker.

What format is the video? Is it a movie file you've imported or was it imported directly from a camera?

Pressing the spacebar on video or pictures (stills from iPhoto) causes the playhead to stop at the playhead position, then restart from that position when the spacebar is pressed again. Works the same with both video and stills on my system.

I've checked iMovie Preferences and Project Properties and there is no setting that allows an option to change the spacebar behaviour. So I'm baffled as to why you are seeing something different - wish I could help!

Sorry - I posted my last reply before refreshing my screen (was away for a short time). I now see your last post so will come back in a moment.

I said it wrong. The playhead goes back to the moment I played from, not the start of frame.. but still it doesn't pause at the instant I hit space bar..

OK - but that is still different to what I'm seeing. Mine stops instantly at the playhead position. Are you using a wireless keyboard or wired - not that it should make any difference. Mine is wireless (Bluetooth), as is my mouse.

No, I'm using the keyboard on my MacBook..

I've tested with my MacBook Pro keyboard as well. That also works the same as my separate keyboard (spacebar pauses video/stills instantly). I use a separate Apple wireless keyboard normally because the MacBook Pro sits in an elavated position on my desk. The separate keyboard is on a slide-out drawer, making it easier to use (and ergonomically better as I'm not reaching up all the time). Anyway, what you are seeing probably has nothing to do with the keyboard - just thought it was worth a try!

Earlier you said: " I need this for accurate picture transition."

What was the source of the pictures? Did you import to iMovie (I'm assuming iMovie '11) from the Photos Browser (one of the browsers on the lower far right of the window)?

I'm not sure what you mean by "accurate picture transition". If you imported separate photos from the browser (or other source) they should appear individually in the timeline. You can then insert a transition between the pictures (a small gap will be evident between each still). Or am I misunderstanding what you are trying to do?
