Hello,

I have asked this question before in these forums, but I cannot locate it.

I have edit the "genre.plist" to included some new music and movie genres. This reverts back to the original everytime I update iTunes.

I have (or at least had) the file backed up in Documents, but I accidently deleted it and sometime ago. Yesterday I updated iTunes and, of course lost the changes I had made.

It is easy enough to fix, but there two types of entry that always causes me problems - genre titles containing the same word and genre titles containing symbols (specifically the ampersand).

Examples would be 1) "Rock" and "Rock 'N' Roll" - these clash because the word "Rock" is the first word in each title (if there was a third genre, eg. "Classic Rock" there would be no clash as "Rock" is not the first word)

                              2) "Scores & Soundtracks" - the ampersand is not required in the "genre.plist" (in fact it will cause iTunes to not be able to display genre artwork thumbnails) and creating two seperate entries in the "genre.plist" linked to the one thumbnail does not work.

I know that these can work in iTunes, but I can never remember how I made work.

Anybody know how to do this?

    Hi guys.

    Just bumping this in the hopes of an answer.

    I cannot remember how I was previously able to have a ROCk genre and a ROCK 'N' ROLL genre without having the same thumbnail appear on both.

    Any ideas would be welcome.

    Finally solved this - the key is to put entries with the same first words in alphabetical order. ampersands replaced with spaced (my genre is Rock&Roll)

    <dict>

                                  <key>matchString</key><string>rock</string>

                                  <key>resourceFile</key><string>genre-rock.jpg</string>

    </dict>

    <dict>

                                  <key>matchString</key><string>rock roll</string>

                                  <key>resourceFile</key><string>genre-rockroll.jpg</string>

    </dict>

    Thanks, eagelate. I'll give that a try.

    Hi eagelat,

    I followed your instructions for the plist.

    In iTunes, I changed the genre of Rock 'N' Roll to Rock & Roll.

    This showed the thumbnail for Rock. I changed it again to Rock&Roll and the thumbnail is just one of the music tracks cover art - it doesn't use the thumbnail that I have in Resources.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers.

    You can't use an & symbol. they are replaced by spaces, so Rock&Roll become Rock Roll.

    Yes, I know - I put the & in the genres box in the Get Info option, not in the plist.

    Hmmm. I don't know what else to say, but the above worked for me. alphabetical was key, and only 1 space. I originally had "Rock & Roll", which meant in the plist it would have looked like "Rock Roll" with three spaces, but it would not work, so I had to go with "Rock&Roll" with no spaces in the genre ID tag, and that left only the one space in plist, and it worked

    I'm trying to edit the .plist for the first time in text wrangler, but when I save it changes it to what seems like a text file and totally breaks ALL genre categories in itunes (until i revert to the old .plist file).

    What am i doing wrong in text wrangler that changes it? I copy and past the entries exactly then I save it as genres.plist in the resource file and replace the old one. Then it breaks. When I saved it to the desktop I noticed that the icon looks different and says "text" I believe thats whats causing the issue, but why? I'm just copying and pasting the entries and then following the steps to edit the genre names and files. Can anyone help?
