I have a movie clip that's 3 minutes long. I need to edit out 12 seconds in the middle of the clip. I've looked for video tutorials, but haven't found one for this. Can someone walk me thru how to do this please. Sorry, I'm a newbie to iMovie 09. Thank you very much for any and all help.

Click on the start of the 12 second section then drag across to the end of that section. The section will now be highlighted with a yellow border. Click on the handles at either end of the yellow border to drag in or out to fine tune the selection if necessary. Now right-click (or Control-click) within the highlighted section and select Split Clip from the pop-up menu. This will split the clip at both ends of the section. Finally, click on the unwanted section (it will then be highlighted) and press the Delete key on the keyboard.

your clip is in a Project ...

    • skim to the right place, or use the cursor-keys to navigate with frame-precision
    • with cmd-shift-s you S_plit the clip
    • select the middle part, hit erase (backspace key)

Note also that after deleting the section you can still adjust, or fine tune, the end and start points of the remaining video at the split points.

Hover the pointer near one of the split points (the edge of the clip) and a left/right arrow symbol will appear. Click on this and an orange handle will appear. This can be dragged back and forth in increments of single frames.

To do this type of fine tuning, make sure that certain preferences are set. In iMovie's menu, select iMovie > Preferences. In the General tab, check the box Show Advanced Tools. In the Browser tab, check the box Show Fine Tuning controls.

The instructions are for imovie '11. You mentioned iMovie '09 - I'm not sure if all this works the same in that version. Although, the latest version of iMovie '11 is numbered 9.0.8 - all a little confusing! You may actually be using iMovie '11.

You can also do this without splitting the clip.

Select the 12 seconds as John Cogell suggested. Then right-click within the selection, and choose DELETE SELECTION.

If, on the other hand, you wanted to keep the 12 seconds and delete the rest, you would choose "Trim To Selection".

Thanks AppleMan. I overlooked that method (Delete Selection), even though I've used it myself at times. There's usually more than one method available in iMovie and we often get locked into sticking with our habitual way of doing things (as in Life generally).

I finally had the chance to sit down tonight and give this a try. I actually tried what all of the different ways that John, Karsten, and Appleman had suggested, and they all worked perfectly. Thank you so much for all of your help. It is very much appreciated! This is a great forum. Have a great day today!!
