I have recently ugraded my camera to a Canon Powershot G15. Whoopee! Really quite excited to get going with it.

Now I find that due to my veritable antiquated set up I cannot view the RAW files using Aperture or Adobe photoshop.

I ahv been going round in cicles in my head with this one. Is It Canon, Apple or Adobe who I need to help me with this one?

My reckoning is that its down to a bit of all three!

So can anyone guide me into the light as to how I can use this new camera with my currengt setup. I know that I should have the most up to date Mac and most up to date software but I can't afford them. So must I be cast adrift by these companies whom I have supported all my adult life?

Is there a work round for me to be able to use Raw format from the G15 on my Powermac MacOs10.5.8 Aperture 2.1.4 set up?

You'll need 10.8, plus camera Raw update 4.0.1 and Aperture 3.

I would check for updates to whatever version of Adobe Camera Raw you have.

Hello Terence, Thanks for your input.

All of the items you mention rely on me having to upgrade my PowerPc G5 to an Intel based mac. This is unfortunately not financially feasible at the moment. In an ideal world this would not be such a problem!

I have been running Aperture 2 for many years. It does what I need it to. I'd love to be able to upgrade.

I was looking for a means to be able to open the CR2 files in Aperture 2. The previews show up but the 'unsupported format' panel comes up in the main image panel.

I had been looking for the Adobe DNG Convertor but again I am in a technological backwater when it comes to finding one which works with the latest CR2 format and my system. I'm sure there is a workround somewhere.

    P.S.

Hope you don't mind me saying but I had an Uncle called Terence Devlin! Kind of interesting to see his name appear here! I use a Gaelic spelling of the Devlin surname.

Apple has been adding the raw support for the new cameras recently either as part of the new MacOS Releases or as raw support bundles that require the latest aperture version, see the footnote to your Camera on the raw support page: Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support

It states clearly, that it *** Requires Aperture 3.4 or later..

So I see no way that you could upgrade your Aperture 2 system on Leopard to be able to use the Apple provided raw converter for your new camera. Does not your camera come with software to do the raw developement? If you coud use that to convert your raw to dng or tiff, you could import these files into Aperture 2. Or is the camera provided software also Intel-only?

    Regards

There's no way you're going to get Aperture or Lightroom working with this: There's no PowerPC version any more.

The best bet would be with Canon's DPP software that probably comes with your camera on CD or DVD.  If it has a universal version there's a slim chance.

But, really, you're going to need to get a new computer, or to shoot JPEG, I think.

"Or is the camera provided software also Intel-only?"

Thanks Leonie, Yes indeed it is Intel only!

    Thanks also William.

It is a PowerPc version I am working with. The issue is the CR2 format.  Oher raw formats are fine NEF and CR. A new computer would be the obvious but not easiest route were it even affordable at the moment.

I shall contact Canon to see what the options may be but I am sure that there must be a work round.

I'm also sure I'm not alone in being in this predicament.

Jpeg is generally fine but RAW offers just that bit more for manipulation and tweaking.

I'll try to progress this as best I can.

    Thanks again

It is not the CR2 format. NEfs from new cameras will give you the same problem. All cameras are different. You would have had this same problem a year ago if you would have bought a new camera. 8^)

You might try some of the open source raw converters, though I don't seem to recall any at the moment.

    Unfortunately, it's not that simple.

CR2 is not a "format."  It's just a file extension. Canon has tens, or maybe hundreds, of different file formats that all end with .CR2.  They're all different, and an updated RAW converter is necessary for new ones.

The same is true, as Keith said, of NEF files, and ARW files (Sony), as well as with all proprietary RAW formats.

I wish you good luck in your endeavor to find something that will convert the G15 files on your computer.  It's unfortunately likely to be a frustrating and fruitless one.

    Hello William,

    Many thanks for your input.

I'd have to beg to differ and say that CR2 is indeed a format though I guess we could be pedantic about it.

Fruits aplenty! Multiple solutions discovered. dcraw, Raw Photo Processor and rawker. Also Graphics Convertor

I can open the CR2 files on my powerpc. Thousands of pounds saved. Powerpc lives to work another day!

Now to get on with the business at hand of using them!

All the best and again many thanks.
