You can solve this yourself by changing your Apple ID to yet another email address. As the message stated, you cannot change your Apple ID to an email address already associated with another Apple ID e.g. "rescue" address or "alternate" address - whether they are already yours or not makes no difference.
Unfortunately this means you may have to create another email account. Check with your ISP to see if another one can be created for free (most allow five or so email addresses), create a free Yahoo or Google Mail email account, or pay for one. Some are only $10 a year.
Also, consider whether it is possible to resurrect your old Hotmail account, just to resolve this Catch-22.
