Using an iMac late 2011 with Mountain Lion,(OSX 10.8.2) and iTunes 11.0.1(12) I don't see this extra tick box either. Can you explain in which menu this is located ? Cheers !

Ok people! I had the exact same problem as described here. And now I think I've solved it. I spoke with a person on the apple support phone line to get it solved (since I just bought my iPad last week I could do this).
What he suggested is for me to restore my iPad to "factory settings". (But before I did that he had me backup my iPad to my computer via iTunes). When my iPad had finished erasing and restoring to a blank new ipad (factory settings) then I setup everything (answered the questions that it asks when you first turn on a new iPad).
Then I clicked on the Music icon/app. Then I clicked on "More" then selected "Shared" then selected my shared library. Then tried selecting Artists and I saw ALL of my artists (where previously I had only seen a random small subset of artists). I clicked on Playlists and saw my playlists which slowly populated with the song counts. I was able to access any playlist there.
If this fix holds then I will be a happy person! I hope this solves your problems too!

I'm truly glad this solution worked for you, but long term I don't feel this is an acceptable fix for all of us experiencing this issue. Apple's new code broke, and for them to expect all their customers to Reset To Zero in order to resolve this, in my view, sweeps whatever problems with their code under the virtual rug, to (maybe) return again at a later date.
Much as MS took a lot of (deserved imho) heat for older versions of Windows breaking with the only solution being to re-install the whole silly thing, this may solve the issue in the near term but is not, by far, an elegant way to fix it long term across a wide user base.

Well I've just discovered that the problem is back! So it turned out to be a temporary fix!!! Oh well. That was a waste of time. I will have to call apple support again.

I've shared the same frustration with either a "Unable to turn on Home Sharing" error, or the music app crashing, or showing only a few songs/artist/albums from my shared library, but renaming the iTunes library as in Kobelucinda's tip instantly cleared up all my issues (for now). Still crashed the first time I typed into the search box while browsing a shared library, but at least I can play music now.

Update after one week of renaming: Renaming returned all artists, albums, songs etc all all my devices (AppleTV, 3 x iPhones & iPad3). Searching the library (on iMac iTunes) works on all devices except the iPad which couldn't search at the library at al and simply crashes, and I'm guessing corrupts the library.
I've renamed the library again to get everything back to 100%. I'm now guessing the iPad is the reason for corrupting my iTunes library. To test my hunch, I signed the iPad out of my home sharing, and am only using the iPhones and ATV. Four days of testing so far, including searching, multiple device playing while others are searching and library is still 100%.
"Knewman" thanks for testing my idea. Is an iPad part of your sharing network?
Any thoughts from others?

I'm convinced that the problems with the music app, and the problems that I'm experiencing with the video player (don't get me started), are caused by the iPad music and video players only. I'm running my library on iTunes 11.latest.Win8 and discovered that the Remote app for iPad has no problems finding all artists and doing searches. Too bad the remote app won't let you play the content locally.
I think the Remote app will morph into the new Music and Video app one day, but Apple is sure taking they're sweet fn timing fixing this.
The recent drop in stock price looks good on them. Maybe it needs to drop below $400 before they decide to fix this?

all artists seem to show up, albeit with a few albums with incorrect album artwork.

@blametheadmin and @wwhite139, I've been trying to recreate the conditions where I saw that icon, but I haven't been having any luck. I noticed this when trying to synch the remote app that I installed on my Windows phone, but I haven't been able to recreate that with the remote app I have on the ipad. It still appears that all my artists and album slists are on the ipad. I did notice that a couple albums were're showing the album art.
One thing I didn't mention is that the search function is music is crashing the app, just like everyone elses.

Hey guys....I was dealing with the same problems for days now and I tried a lot of things. Today I solved the problem ( at least for me) in getting my old router back to work. And it did. After that I've changed back again to my new router and changed the following settings....
...here's what I did:
In router settings (not Windows firewall)
1. Open the TCP port 3689 of computer IP(be sure to enter the right adress of the computer where itunes is located - just find out via cmd.exe and ipconfig)
2. Open the UDP port 5353 of computer IP (same as above)
3. And I'm german, so don't know what it is called exactly in english, but you have to change to WPA/WPA2 PSK and use a TKIP key
not AES or stuff like that.
Of course you have to open ports in your windows firewall too, but that is probably already done. If not, you should just uninstall and install itunes with all its components again!

I've used b, g, n and mixed modes and nothing.WEP, WPA, WPA2, AES and nothing. I relied only on MAC filtering to provide access to wifi and nothing. What I'm I doing about this now? Nothing

Agreed blametheadmin, the fact that the remote app running on the same ipad works proves the point.
That's why i'm so ******. So many people wasting so much time, and apple taking their sweet time.
