Sorry only joining this thread now.

Can I ask how old id your MBP that they fixed it for free and replace your logic board ?

I have a MacBookPro 15" brand new Dec-2012. This NVRM[0/1:0:0] problem kills me every week or so. Brand new machine and it'll run maybe a week before crashing.

Took to Apple store. They ran the tests, couldn't find anything wrong, re-imaged it. Just crashed again.

This time, I've set "Computer Sleep" to Never. Maybe there's something about the sleep that's triggering it. So far, every time I've seen this issue, it's after I've been away from the laptop for a while.

Before the re-image, I had gfxCardStatus running and set to the discrete NVIDIA. (I need the graphics performance for my work.) Still crashed.

Maybe the sleep is tickling something.

Hi. I have this issue on a mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15". Very certain it's the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M. A "Genius" ran diagnostics in-store and found nothing wrong with the hardware.

Can anyone advise what I should do? Anything I should say or do to get Apple to repair my Mac? The Mac is completely unnusable as a work computer.

Hi jamespaulley, I experienced the same as you, they couldn't found nothing wrong with the Apple software tests, so the technicians keep the mac for testing, so in a few days they were able to reproduce the error some times, so they could report to Apple and they replaced my logic board, after that I never had this kernel panics again! All works fine and more faster now.

Hope everyone can fix their macbooks!

    Hi jamespaulley, linuxlizard, bmccarthy2hp, vitaminme,

You will find the ansers to all your questions in the thread if you just go back and read...

    In short;

jamespaulley - yes, ask them to run VST which will show the error (read back through the thread for detailed instructions on how to do that). Then remind them to read OP555 which has the details on how they can request the replacement logic board even if it is out of warranty.

linuxlizard - you have a different fault the one discussed in this thread is only for the 15" mid 2010. Good luck.

bmccarthy2hp - if the machine is not a 15" mid 2010 then it won't be covered and it will have to still be under warranty or the Mac repair agents will charge you to fix it. If it is then it is covered for 3 (or maybe 4) years from the purchase date irrelevant of the warranty status (assuming you haven't dropped it and left a big dent in the case).

vitaminme - as mentioned numerous times, the fact it is out of warranty is irrelevant. Quote surrort article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088, repair process OP555 and AST/VST to get the job done. Unfortunately there are still repair agents that have not come across this issue and may give you friction. If they follow the process of running AST then VST and reading OP555 then it will become clear to them.

    Good luck.

Thankyou for reminding participants to look back into the history of this thread, MrSparkle75.

All - You'll find from my previous post at https://discussions.apple.com/message/19233354#19233354 that 17" Mid-2010 MacBookPros will exhibit this problem and others and will have their logic board replaced for $free if you are as persistent as I was.

The Genius at our local Apple store would not authorise an out-of-warranty logic board replacement given TS4088 and a demonstable graphics and logic board panic complying with the 15" symptom list. They directed me through Apple Care to local Apple Technical Support people who liased with Apple Engineering (USA) throughout the thorough diagnosis of this problem. They even re-engineered a custom testing and reporting tool for this purpose. I was also lucky that the native extended hardware test exibited a clear error, albeit on the second pass, not the first.

So my advice to you all is to be persistent, keep all of your evidence (symptoms, panics, hardware test results) and be prepared to escalate your issue past the Apple Genius, through Apple Care to the genuine technical support people that understand and will have empathy with your issue.

Finally, be prepared for an extensive round of negotiation as the 3-year moratorium on this matter to replace the logic board for $free is very close to expiry, so act quickly now!. My resolution took many months, but I finally won and our 17" MacBookPro has not exibited any problem since, so the latest Lion OS and all the apps that demonstrated the problem have been updated and have operated prefectly for 8 months now.

Just wanted to give another success story: After initial Genius visit, who found nothing wrong, I went to a different store a couple of weeks later. This guy knew the issue well, he knew to run AST then VST, which FAILED and he ordered me a new logic board. Just need to take the Mac back in a few days when they have the logic board in stock.

So, anyone with this issue: read up, arm yourself with the facts in this thread and be persisitent! You're entitled to a new logic board!

One thing I forgot to ask in-store, that someone here might know: Am I able to pay the difference and get a higher-spec logic board? Faster processor, better graphics card?

    Cheers.

Hi, I also have Kernel Panic issues. I'm using a MBP i7 mid-2010. When i'm using FCP X, the screen suddenly goes off and the Mac stops responding completely. I've tried all the keyboard buttons, but they don't do anything and i have to hard restart. I didn't think much of it to start with as it only happened a couple of times, but now over the last week it's happening more regularly, sometimes within 5 minutes! Here's one of the crash logs from a few days ago, but it doesn't always generate one upon login.

    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xa22c9b): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error

If you got this error with NO third-party kernel extensions loaded, it would correlate strongly with a Hardware failure. But yours has added extensions:

    com.eltima.ElmediaPlayer.kext    1.0

    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower    1.3.1

    com.squirrels.airparrot.framebuffer    3

    com.squirrels.driver.AirParrotSpeakers    1.7

    at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch    2.4.0

If you can replicate the failure with no third-party kernel extensions, you may have a graphics failure.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

Just wanted to say thanks for your documentation of this hardware problem. My Mid-2010 MBP 15" was starting to Kernel Panic daily, especially when scrolling rapidly in apps; mostly Mail, Safari and especially Chrome. I could force a failure very easily in Chrome.

I used your post to guide a Genius at one of my local Apple Stores and low and behold saw a huge "System Failure" message when it ran the VST test. A new Logic board is on its way as I write.

mine is in service at apple store for the kernel panic issue, i am lucky enough that the genius found the problem and i was told that logic board is replace and they are testing it right now i will be able to pick it up next day if tests are passed, I hope everything works ok, Laptop was working flawlessly for last 2 years with this bug started after installation of ML. there were few blank screen hangup but it comes back in few seconds and then kernel crash made it unuseable. i still thank apple to take care of this issue.

I had the same problem described here, and it became more frequent (several times a week) after upgrading to OS 10.8.

I saved a couple of the crash logs that were presented to me after restarting (I just selected the crash log text and dragged it to the desktop to make a text clipping), then made a Genius Bar appointment and showed the crash logs to the Genius. He immediately started filling out a repair order for a logic board replacement. (My computer is still covered under AppleCare.)

That was a month ago and I haven't had a crash since then. Whew!
