I have some old mini dv tapes and I'd like to archive content off of them. The drive in my Canon ZR 10 no longer works. I'd like to ingest the taped material into Final Cut Pro X. Are there any options other than getting the camera repaired/ or buying a used camera? I haven't been able to find a new mini dv camera that can handle my old tapes. Also, Costco will transfer content from tape to dvd but I don't know if the dvd would retain full lossless quality.

The only way you can transfer Mini-DV tapes to any editing app is via a Mini-DV camera or tape deck.

If the video is transferred to a DVD there will be a slight loss in quality.

Your best bet is to beg, borrow or steal a camera.

Converting to DVD involves quality losses and the DVD format itself is of lower quality than DV.

If you wish to edit your own DV footage, I strongly suggest against the DVD conversion.

As Ian comments, get yourself a DV cam/deck and capture to FCP X in an edit friendly codec.

DVD stuff is not edit friendly, plus, if you want to edit later on, you will have to transcode the DVD back to DV or similar adding to quality loss and more handling.

My suggestion would be to purchase a used DV camera on eBay. After capturing your tapes, resell it on eBay. If you are lucky, you may only have a net cost of $10-$20.
