It does in as soon as I start up, log in and randomly when working. I've defaulted the settings and performed SMC and PRAM restarts. Can anyone suggest what else I might try?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

My grampa used to do that....

But I digress. Open Console, in Utilities, leave it running and look in All Messages for everything that pops up just prior to the Mac going to sleep. That should help pinpoint what it is experimenting and causing the issue. Cut & paste the messages back here if you need help with the interpretation.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:

    sudo pmset -g log | grep -v UUID | tail -50

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste (command-V) into the Terminal window. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.

Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

If it's a clue: even the app "Caffiene" doesn't stop the screensaver from coming on.

The screen saver? That's not sleep. Please describe exactly the problem you're having, taking nothing for granted.

  • 8. Re: My MacBook Pro falls asleep, always!
    alwaysalwayssmile Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Perhaps I have misunderstood my own problem by confusing sleep with screensaver.

When I start my computer, as soon at the log in screen pops up, the default screensaver comes on. I shake it off, log in and immediately the screen goes black and after a few second of clicking typing the log in appears again and I log in again. Once that practice is complete, the MacBook may go into screensaver one more time or begin to operate notmally until at a random moment, I may be typing, reading an email or clicking links on Reddit, the screensaver will begin to load and I have to stop it and type in my password to unlock. My screen saver is set to 20 minutes and I am aware of my one Hot Corner. The display/energy settings are at default, the screensaver is regular photo slide show. I have now turned the screen saver off completely, and while the problems at log in didn't go away, I have not experienced a random Screensaver moment yet. This is a problem, however, because I need my laptop to not be accessable when I am away from my desk. I prefer a 5 minute Screensaver, but I bumped it up to 20 thinking that was part of my problem perhaps, now it is off.

Does this help at all? Sorry for the poor explaniation before.

You say Caffeine doesn't prevent the screen saver from starting. That only happens when its icon in the menu bar looks like a full coffee cup. Does it? If not, click the icon and it should become full.

    alwaysalwayssmile Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I've used that program for a long time.

I have not had the issue now that I have completely turned off my screensaver. I do need to be able to use it though.

Does that narrow it down any?

sorry i joined de discushion late. seemz uv solved the sleeping issue but 2 avoid the bother of typing ur password every after the screen saver:

    1.go 2 system preferences

    2.then 2 security and privacy

3.then in general settings uncheck the require password after sleep or screensaver.

NB: be sure not 2 cut the RED wire, hee hee

When the screen saver was turned on, and you were having the problem, and you started Caffeine, and it didn't stop the screen saver from starting, was the coffee cup full? That's what I'm trying to find out.

  • 13. Re: My MacBook Pro falls asleep, always!
    alwaysalwayssmile Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Yes, the cup was full. That is why this is peculiar, caffiene is a program I couldn't live without and the fact that this problem seemingly overrides it is the only thing that made me think that it isn't a Settings related user error.

Thank you, but I need it to be password protected. This is my office computer.
