As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Thanks for your advice Terence. Sorry for delay in replying. Have deleted about 3000 old photos as wella s many of the 'faces' created and duplicates. I did this on advice from Apple store who said that iPhoto does not cope very well with that number of photos. In fact they said 10,000 was probably the limit! Anyway, am now down to about 43,000 photos and this has has had a tremendous effect. Mail, Safari and Address Book are now back up to speed. iPhoto also alot quicker though could be quicker still. Will, plod on with deleting unwanted photos in the hope that this carries on improving the situation.

The Apple Store you consulted with are talking through their collective hats.
iPhoto up till iPhoto v5: Good for 25,000 in any library
iPhoto v6 to v9: Good for 250,000 images in any one Library
Since v9: Good for 1,000,000 images in any one Library.
What happened when you ran the test, above?
