What country are you in? I haven't seen anything from Apple to indicate that the feature is limited only to certain countries, but it's possible that it is.

Strange, then. I'd think it was because your MBP has an iSight camera, not a Facetime HD camera as the Early 2011 and later-model MBPs have, but my iMac also has the iSight camera and the redeem via camera feature works here. So I don't know why it wouldn't work for you.
