Hey there,

ok, since the last entry on Normalization dates back to 2006 (at least the one I found), I would like to throw this one out there.

I have a conference with different volume levels (voices at different distances from the mic) that needs to be muxed to a (post-prod) slide presentation in Final Cut X.

My questions are:

- how can I quickly normalize the audio track (all voices) to about the same levels without losing all of my hair?

- how can I speed up / slow down speech for a slide without affecting pitch?

- how can I do this in the most effective workflow between Logic Pro and Final Cut X?

- do I need any other software that can speed this up?

All help is much appreciated,

Whats wrong with using FCX for this? If my aim was intelligibility and quick editing speed, then this would be my choice. If I would strive for an Amy Award however, then use Logic in all its glory.

To 'quickly normalize' a given audio track, you could Bounce In Place with the Normalize option engaged. It will most likely sound horrible. If you insert a Low/High Pass, prior to the bounce, it will sound a bit better.

Inserting and carefully adjusting Noise gates/compressors will probably produce an even better sound still.

My workflow between Logic and FCX:

Import the soundtrack and the movie track as separate files into Logic. Do your thing in Logic, bounce the results of your work to HD and import the audio into your FCX project.

If I where you I'd go with FCX for this job.

    Good luck!

Videonoob, I really would like to assist and advice something sensible, if only you could state:

    a) problem

    My answer would be:

    b) plugin (maybe)

    For instance:

    >demux audio from video from original footage<

You can do that in Logic no plugin needed.

    >- fix audio (normalize, tweak, cut)<

You really want me to sum up plugins I would use for this? If you insist, I'll prepare a shopping list......

    >In the meantime:

    - export slide presentation to .mov

    - arrange bits and pieces in Final Cut Pro X

    - sync bits and pieces of audio to it

    - render and pray <

    That's done in FCX right?

Don't know any plugins in Logic to make the job any easier.

No problem whatsoever over here VN!

Forget the normaliser and try a leveller like the one from

    www.meldaproduction.com >MAutoVolume<

Maybe a touch of compression and a limiter if you really want to go wild.

You'll find quality stuff on the above mentioned site too.

    Hope this helps.

Have a nice day and take it easy!
