How can I get program Help?  When I hit help and click on a topic, a window opens saying I am not connected to internet and that if I am connected, to try again later.  I am connected to the internet, but still can't get through.  I can go to the Apple suppot site, but find it hard to find the topics I am looking for.  It doesn't matter what Apple program in ML  10.8.2 I have open, none will let me get help through them. It is two weeks later and still not able to get on-line help through the open program.  Any ideas?

Thanks for the response.  I am under warrenty and did call but they really had no idea what the issue is.  Interestingly enough, the individual I spoke to tried his machine and had the same problem.  He was supposed to do some more research and get back with me, but it has now been a week and I have heard nothing from him.  I have tried repeatedly to get help on the programs and all have the same response.  Anyone have any ideas.  I am new to Apple and this is very frustrating when trying to learn to use the Apple programs.

    Bee,

I thought I had explained the problem in my first post, but maybe not so let me try again.  Any time I try to go to help through a program (Safari, Finder, Mail, Calender etc) a small window opens giving the option to search or select Help for that specific program.  Whether I search for something or select the help center for that program, I get a window with options for help topics to look at.  When I select any of those topics, I get a window that opens that says "The selected topic is currently unavailable.  Make sure you are connected to the internet.  For Help connecting, choose Apple menu>System Preferences, click Network, and click "Assist Me"  If you're connected to the Internet, and the content still doesn't apear, try again later."

First, I am connected to the internet and have no problem going to any site, except Apple help through the programs.  Second, I have been trying this for a couple of weeks now with the exact same resut.

If I hold down control and click on one of the links, copy it and open in a Safari tab, the URL link is:  "file:///Applications/mail.app/contents/Resources/mail.help/contents/Resources/ index.html?localePath=>English.lproj#mail35700"  and on the page it says "(id not found: mail35700).  Each program has aslightly different URL (where the above one says mail, Safari said Safari, Finder said Finder etc.  Also, the number at the end of the URL was different (35862 was the number for Safari).  But despite the slightly different URL and number, the message was always: (id not found: program-number)

Hope this makes sense and explains the problem better.

This doesn't sound like the same problem, but you might try deleting the com.apple.help.plist and com.apple.helpviewer.plist from your user Library/Preferences folder. You can get to your user Library by holding down the option key and selecting Library from the Go menu in Finder.

Barney, if I delete those items and it doesn't work, what have I lost in those folders/items?  Do they automatically rebuild or ???

Yes, they automatically rebuild.  You won't lose anything.

I deleted both but get the same error message: The selected topic is currently unavailable.  This is my first MAC and it is kind of hard to learn the programs when I can't access help.  Appreciate the efforts so far even though they haven't worked.

In doing some more research, I came across the following at the Apple-Support-Site Map:  "Help works even if your are not connected to the Internet, and is updated when you do connect to the Internet to ensure you have the latest information."  This makes it sound like there should be a help file on the computer with all the information on the OS or whatever application is open.  Since it does not work for me, does that mean that file is missing and if so, how do I find it or download it?  I just rechecked updates for OS 10.8.2 and there is nothing newer.  Any thoughts?
