It's very tough to help if you don't complete your profile and tell us anything about what iMac you have and the version of OS X installed and what update you're referring to or how the printer is connected to your computer.
The first place to start is to open Disk Utility (Applicaitons - Utilities - Disk Utility) and Repair Disk Permissions, do this 2x. If this doesn't work then use Reset the printing system in Mountain Lion
Sorry, nothing has changed so I didn't realize I had to update my profile. I will do.
I will try what you suggest, I did repair permissions a few days ago, but may have been before I updated. I have an intel imac, mid 2010, running Mountain Lion, 10.8.2. I received an OSX update a day or two ago which was an HP. Printer is direct wired and I have had to use Preview for the last several years to scan photos.
Thanks, sorry again for the confusion.
When I go to preview, import from scanner, the window comes up and I have to "show details" and it will start an overview scan. It gets part way through and I get an error message "Scanner reported an error" An error occurred while communicating with the scanner.
I ran Repair Permissions twice and Verify Disk once. No go. There may just be a new way of accomplishing the scan.
Hi: Thanks for your responses. I was working on a project and I didn't want to take a chance that resetting the printers would goof up the printing so I just took photos with my slr camera instead of scanning.
I did finally discover that I can scan using Image Capture, although it doesn't give me an overview scan, but will work anyway.
