Q: Used to read/write, now can only read SD cards

Hey all. I've got two micro SD cards and a normal SD card that I've been able to read/write on with no problems... Until tonight. Now, I can only read them.

My SD card is the one I use in my digital camera. When I plug it right into my MacBook Pro's SD card slot, I can't delete items from it via Finder or Disk Utility. I also cannot delete images from it through iPhoto.

However, if I hook the camera up to the laptop using a USB cable, I can delete the images through iPhoto.

All three cards are Fat16 which, I assume, has always been the case. I've never had a problem until now. I've even tried formatting the cards in the digital camera, but it hasn't changed anything.

When I look at the cards through Disk Utility, I can only Verify the discs and nothing else.

None of the cards are locked. I'm using an SD card adapter to load up the micro SD cards.

What could the issue be? I'm hoping to try a USB micro SD adapter tomorrow, to see if the issue could be my SD card slot. Any information would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Well I have the same problem on a MBP JUL 2010... it's definetively a problem of the MBP reader.

If I attach any SD card reader on the USB, no problem at all with any SD SDHC card

same cards appear  all locked when inserted on the buid in SD card reader.

    The question is:

it's a software issue or it's a mechanical issue like NURV2600 post suggest?

    Cheers!

Wow, two years later--this is apparenlty a fix that still works. I have an April 2011 MBP quad i7 2.2ghz (10.7.5) by the way. Thanks for the fix, weird as it may be.

Yep!  Works for me, too.  I have a 2010 Macbook Pro.  Thanks, all!

The tape solution worked—it's quick and painless. I found a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_XkvkHDveo.

Flicking the slider switch on the SD card to the middle postion worked a treat....Thank you to skatalite13.

Odd that you daon't have to do the same when using the card in Bootcamp

    Great.. You solved my problem

On all the SD cards, if I keep the lock slider in between Locked and Unlocked, the computer will see it as read/write. If it's fully at unlocked, it'll be read only.

There are some answers in this and other threads:

    1. sometimes a SMC reset works.

    2. there are SD cards where the read/write lock position is in the middle for read and write!

    3. the card is not correctly formatted. this sd card slot is mainly for getting photos into the computer, they should be formatted in the camera. Do not use this card slot as a replacement of the usb sticks.

    4. the card slot may have a bit of flu, use a external card reader.

Quite apart from this being a really annoying problem to have, it is the last thing I expected from a brand new Mac Air.   In the absence of substancial hard drive space and only having 2 USB slots, the SD slot is ESSENTIAL!

Come on APPLE, sort this out.

The bent pin solution worked for me eventually but it takes some fiddling and I am just waiting for it to stop working again!   Thanks for everyone here, without whom I would be without my music!

Same problem, and tends to happen from time to time. What worked for me was going over the SD Card slot really well with a can of compressed air.

Wow that's great! Seemed really weird at the start (didn't think that was a workable solution) but it seems it works great, so long as you find that one intricate spot.

    Thanks skatalite13 !

Unbelievable. Thank goodness the old posts are still about as these issues keep coming up. I have a 2010 Mini Unibody with the built in SD card reader and i had the same issue. Really flaky on read/write ability with multiple sd cards. they work fine in my 5.99 combo floppy/SD/CF/MSPro reader in my windows 7 machine.

I feel like Apple is taking their clues on manufacturing from NASA. "You know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder."

I don't use the DVD burner inside my mini because it is flaky and hard to replace if it fails. I cant use the SD card reader because it doesn't work. and i don't use the wireless because it it fails it is a bear to replace and it doesn't work nearly as well as the ethernet port. So why did i buy this thing brand new, this all in one thing?

Anyway, sorry to ramble, but i just wanted to thank you for the post, even though it is older, it is still relevant to me.

    Thanks

    TeB

Nudging the switch somewhere near the unlock position work for me. But it is frustrating that I need to adjust it to a new position every time I reinserting the card.

And I have late 2013 15" Macbook Pro high end model. So this problem still persist on latest Mac hardware.

Thanks for the tip guys. I hope Apple really pay attention to this small annoying problem.
