System Preferences -> Sharing -> Web Sharing to enable the web server.
The default system web page is located in /Library/WebServer/Documents, and you can access this via Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder, then enter /Library/WebServer/Documents
You can access a peronal web page using http://your.mac/~yourShortUsername
The index.html for this page is in your home folder -> SItes
Thank you for your reply. However I do know, as I indicated, wher the WebServer should be and indeed is on my computer at home. The problem is that on my office computer it is not there and I have no idea ahat to do about this. I hope someone can help with this.
For Snow Leopard, /Library/WebServer/Documents is where I expect to find it.
Mountain Lion has eliminated the personal web server option. But you do say Snow Leopard.
There is nothing much special about /Library/WebServer/... so you could copy the files over from your home computer and set the permissions the match. Chances are you are most interested in /Library/WebServer/Documents/index.html and after that everything else will be your own content.
Thanks. I will try that tomorrow. I still wonder why the folder was not installed in the first place or when I reinstlled the system. I suppose it's absence in Lion meant that some jigery pokery in Terminal will be needed.
